wtf is wrong with 3dmark?

some program makes my 3dmark run like shit. i don't know this bullsh1t happens but it's getting very irritating. i already formatted today and installed a few programs at a time then tested it to try to figure out which fvcking programs is doing this.

i've done 5 restores tonight and i'm just stuck at what to do or how to figure it out.

my system does right around 10800ish in 03 but when it starts acting up it goes down to 8000 and below. card isn't overclocked either.

nf3 dfi 250gb
gig of 3200
win xp pro
evga 6800gt
2800+ a64 @ 2ghz

wtf is causing the piss poor performance in 3dmark? doe sit ni 05 and 01 also.

is this common?

task manager doesn't show anything funny running between good runs and lower ones?

when i had sage tv it would do that out of the blue, but i don't know what you're running.

everything is updated, has been btw.
i've installed 4 progs at a time and then ran 3dmark03 and so far i'm maintaining a score above 10k.

hopefully it won't start doing it again.

I don't know what's up either but every time I run 3DMock I lose performance. Everything being the same if I run it (any version) then reboot and run it again I have a lower score. 😱 :|

I really don't like those programs. Derrick, have you tried RTHDRIBL? That won't give you an e-pen0s score to brag about but it will test your system. Or how about Comanche 4 benchmark?

i love rthdribl. it doesn't give the scores but you can just watch the fps and see. and sets the as5 real quick, lol

I take it winamp isn't the culprit?

I used winamp concurrently with that GT and I didn't notice that problem. How are your games?

nothing to do with the card, it's software related.

i ran doom 3 out of the box install to see what fps i would get while it's messing up in 3dmark. if it's just 3dmark that has the problem then i can live with that but i just want to make sure it's software related(95% sure, don't see how it could be anything with the card)

1024 res
high quality
4xaf
i got 63.5 fps with the card at stock.

i'm going to restore back to where i only have my drivers and 3dmark installed and install doom 3 and if i get 63.5 or around that then i know it's 3dmark. i still won't have any idea why 3dmark does that but fvck it who cares, if it doesn't affect my games then all is well.

does that fps in doom 3 sound right?

that's good to hear. i love the card man, hasn't given me any problems, i just HATE having a problem and not knowing the solution, it drives me nuts. i stayed up until 3am last night trying to figure it out. i'm dead tired.

I wonder if it could be a boot sector virus?
The only way to get rid of one, (if it is one) is to go to the manufacturers website for your hard drive and download utility to test the drive. There will be an option to "Write zero's"to the drive which totally reverts the drive to factory status. Simply formatting a drive cannot get rid of most boot sector virus's.

This just crossed my mind. It may not be anything like this. Just a possiblity.

if this is the case, does it affect random programs or the entire computer?(i.e. games, etc.)

I don't think a boot sector virus would just affect 3dmark. it would have to be very sophisticated and there's really no point in making a virus just to screw 3d apps. infact I doubt Windows would even boot with a virus. his doom3 fps sounds fairly reasonable for the settings. you could just erase the boot sector on the main hard disk using a program run from another disk. after that you can insert the windows xp cd and do recovery console. type fixmbr and fixboot and you should be set. it depends if the MFT was destroyed then you may have to format and use a recovery tool to relink the files to the MFT table. if NOTHING else (deleting \windows and reinstalling) seems to fix it, then it could be but I really doubt it. don't go erasing your boot sectors though unless you don't care about any of the files on there, or are a big risk taker. you'll have to use a recovery program to retrieve the files and there's no guarantee.

OP, it might just be a bug with 3dmark man. but don't go on a rampage just because 3dmark doesn't run right. if everything else is fine (your doom3 score seems reasonable), then forget it. to be honest i wouldn't give a rat's ass if 3dmark didn't run on my pc and everything else was fine. it might be a sign of other programs that may not work as well, so that can be bad. but if it's just 3dmark don't worry about it.

so what have you done thus far? they should be done in this order if you want to do them.

- closed all running processes except crucial system ones. close antivirus and firewall programs and every last loaded exe by using the Task Manager.
- reinstalled 3dmark
- clean out your drivers with "driver cleaner" and completely reinstall the latest official drivers.
- run Windows Anti-Spyware beta (catches more than Ad-Aware and Spybot)
- closed all unused services (use msconfig to disable all non-microsoft services)
- reinstalled Windows
- formatted
- erased the MBR

which of these have you tried so far? where are you at now? if you're paranoid about being hacked without a firewall if you have one then just unplug your internet connection while you do 3dmark. i'm not recommending you do any of those last ones but i need a clue of where you're at now.

along the same line as xtknight, does the other 3dmarks run ok? or aquamark? could it just be a bad install/download of '03?

i formatted and haven't installed 3dmark yet. have all the latest drivers on everything.

i got 63 fps when i was having the 3dmark problem but when i restored to where i was not having the 3dmark problems(getting good scores) i got 70ish compared to the 63.

going to install steam and css and compare my scores.

like i said i don't give a sh1t about 3dmark, i use it mainly to test new drivers, going to give css a stroll and if the scores are good then i'm gold.

will LYK
