Not knowing what hardware you are buying is actually pretty central to the issue of why old macs sell for so much.

Lets just remind you guys who say Macs are way over priced.

Samsung tries to copy just about everything Apple has been doing for the last two+ years and often their products are just as expensive. When they started to copy, they were even more expensive than the comparable Apple product.

It's not just Apple products. What it really comes down to is that sellers on eBay think their used outdated computers and computer parts are really worth 90+% of their original sale price, which is technically true as long as there is no shortage of gullible and naive buyers with plenty of disposable income :)

(1) respectfully...you forgot the UNDISPUTABLE HISTORICAL FACT:

Jobs stole from XEROX Palo Alto Research Center. Jobs did not innovate anything.

Jobs was just a fucking sales smoke/mirrors schmuch who was 2 things:
(1) Steve Jobs outright and openly stole and got away with, and became personally wealthy by STEALING Xerox's innovation (Jobs contributed NOTHING to the technological innovation achieved by Xerox) , and

(2) Jobs was an intelligent person and personally aggressive as hell all about HIS EGO. Jobs pushed HIMSELF forward as the point of connection for moneybags investors seeking places to put $,. As for Jobs the man himself...Jobs was a 10% total asshole, undeserving accolades by7 obama. Jobs only got his personal fortune because some idiot inside Xerox decided to not pursue Jobs in a lawsuit, although Xerox certaintly would have prevailed over Jobs PLAINLY OBVIOUS, NOTORIOUS THEFT of the Xerox IP. In most circumstacces (like yours personally) you would go to prison for the IP theft S. Jobs got away with. Jobs got wealty, influential& powerful BECAUSE some LAZY buffoon idiot in the bowels of XEROX ultimately decided it wasn't worth pursuing in courts. Xerox made among the worst decisions of the modern era (not counting Xerox's similsarly impotent failures to pursue Xerox's IP rights to Ethernet, and to the the Mouse, which Xerox also invented. Xerox = dickkless wonder.

Cliffs: Megalominacle shithead salesman, psychedelic drug user and all-round general ASSHOLE who didn't know 1+1 (universal concurrence) Steve Jobs attained undeserved personal wealth & influence (because of the $ he UNJUSTIFIABLY banked) by a total fluke, because Xerox INCREDIBLY(?) had no balls to assert its plainly justifiable rights.

I personally had an office in Silicone Valley during Jobs
heyday, and my consulting clients UNIVERSALLY joked Steve Jobs was an egomaniacle asshole to the 9th powera -total shithead. My Mt. View office was 2 mile from his but I didn't bother to go meet him (he would have accepted me with my mega mega mega buck Nobody declines. I've wondered whether I would've accepted an appointment from Job. Maybe not given Steve Jobs" notorious reputation as an extreem self-aggrandizing shithead. Speculative).

After all, it's not like Jobs created something...Jobs STOLE gui from xerox. That's undisputable historical FACT.

Then famously smaug the slimy gates re-stole the Xerox / apple GUI and made Windows.

Jobs+Gates=assholes for eternity, but if yuou suck the teat of $ then they are your FALSE FALSE FALSE demigods.

the best part about mac fanbois

is how much time they will spend trying to convince people that the money they spend is justified

for you it may be, but it is certainly not for me

Meh. You can make the argument for any premium product. Dell Ultrasharp 27" vs some Korean no name off Ebay. Any $1000 ultrabook (Apple/Samsung/Asus/ect) over a more conventional sized $600 device with psuedo-similar stats. A luxury car vs a more economy one.

And so on. Some people value certain polish, features, style, ect that you can't exactly put a dollar value or build out cost sheet on. Others don't. And Apple isn't the only company or product line that caters to that market.

I thought you could just click with two fingers...right?

Yep, that is pretty much it. In practice however it is not always 100% accurate when you have "right clicked" as opposed to "left clicked". Also, most games have the ability to register simultaneous right and left clicks and that isn't possible with a single button trackpad. Even simple games like Minecraft become rather frustrating to play with the trackpad. It isn't that big of a deal, I find myself using the iPad for gaming more these days anyhow and honestly as nice as it is I probably fire the MBP up once a month if I am lucky. My duaghter gets great use out of it however and that makes the purchase worth it. I sort of bought the Mac on a whim to see how the Apple world works.

People can hate if they want and I am primarily a Linux user these days but the Mac is a seriously nice laptop. I will say that it will probably make you sterile if used without a lapdesk, but that probably isn't unique to the Mac. I wouldn't use OSX as a desktop OS but it makes for a very nice laptop experience. Gaming probably isn't a strong point in favor of the Mac, but most people probably know that going in. For everything else it is pretty nice.

Eben Moglen said:
The death of Mr. Jobs is a positive event. I’m sorry to break it to you like that. He was a great artist and a moral monster. And he brought us closer to the end of freedom every time he put something out [..]. Inside those fine little boxes with the bit-up apples on them [...] is a bunch of free software, tailored to give him control. [...] He screwed us every time he could and he took everything we gave him and he made beautiful stuff that controlled it’s users.

well yes.

on one hand is the political bozos like obama, trying to wring out for their own selfish political "acceptance" any gain for themselves thy can out of Jobs.

On other hand is the plain factual unvarnished truth:
(a)jobs got prominent because of his money.
(b) jobs got money by getting away with IP theft
(c) jobs never invented, engineered ONE SINGLE THING EVER. NADA.

The above a-c are true verifiable historical noncontroversial FACTS.

Yet we must suffer histerical, incapable-of-critical-thought-idiotic witless brain-dead untutored BUFOOnS like this:

[renz20003, "Oh well ..."

The fact is, Steve Jobs was merely a megalomaniacal salesman. Steve Jobs wasn't a scientist, engineer nor technologist. He was a used car salesman in the computer venue, with a Mick Jagger superhuman EGO.

Jobs got rixch from blatently stealing intellectual property from XEROX PARC. Jobs got away with what would land YOU in prison because some stupid fool buried down inside the works of XEROX let it go rather than prosecute. Jobs' escape & consequent multimillionaire enrichment was a MIRACLE.

So now you go off and continue wearing your blinders so that you can continue as a goggle-eyed true believer...your holy prez barrysotero lauds jobs, so you go right off and and do exactly what jobs did. Barry says so!!! Who knows maybe you'll get super rich & influential too, like Jobs did, if you can just get clean away from OPENLY BLATENLY t stealing the valuable intellectual property from somebody who's in disarray and therefore fails to sue your ass into prison. Maybe you can stral something to get you rich & influentiual from...who's your target, say maybe IBM?, Samsung?, Moog?, ...you try with any of them what jobs got away with against Xerox, you go tright ahrad & PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW THAT WENT, you idiot.

There is one thing that everyone who has posted in this thread will agree on.

1. Macs are more expensive than a regular PC with comparable hardware.

A lot of people will have extreme difficulty rationalizing the extra cost that is associated with a Mac and will just assume that people who purchase Macs (or Apple products in general) are fools, idiots, or etc.

I switched to Mac for the following reasons:

1. Quality display - I had issues finding laptops with a display that was remotely comparable to a Mac. I experience extreme eye fatigue when working on computers with low-end displays and I can work longer and more comfortably on IPS panels.

2. The Mac Touchpad - Most laptops have horrible touchpads and you need to plug in a mouse to do any tasks that require a lot of clicking to avoid frustration/hand fatigue. I've actually gotten to the point that I can manipulate the Mac touchpad with my thumbs to avoid taking my hands off of home row. (This is very handy while coding)

3. Form factor - You will have serious issues finding a laptop that can match the performance of a macbook pro and its form factor. My 15" macbook is 1/3 the weight and 1/3 the thickness of the 15.4 laptop that it replaced.

4. Operating System - Apple is the only company that designs the software and hardware for its product line. Everything works well together and I don't have to deal with the ridiculous bloatware that you get with almost every other company. I also don't to deal with getting random things working right in Linux. It took me forever to get the hybrid graphics card in my old laptop to work right in Linux. I currently get the Linux/Unix experience without the driver headaches.

5. Rebooting - I don't have to do it.

Here is my current uptime:
23:38 up 45 days, 4:43, 2 users, load averages: 1.64 1.67 1.60
I don't think you could pull that off with most laptops.

Micro econ was a prerequisite for my graduate program. So there I sat for a semester watching the prof move the curves back and forth and up and down. A whole semester on one frickin graph. The final was a multiple guess exam concerning the one graph. There were two hundred students in the class. Forty of them flunked because they couldn't grasp the one graph, the one graph we spent an entire semester staring at. Several students scored in the teens, well below the expect value for random guessing.

Anyway carry on, were we on Apple sucks or Apple is well worth the money?

Because the marketing department is better than the devil at getting people to buy monkey's paws.

For every person who actually needs a mac for productivity there are at a half dozen people with no clue who bought one because of slick marketing.

To each their own.

Let's see if I have the checklist correct here...

Search to see when last mac thread was made in OT.

If it has been awhile then go ahead and make one.

Topic doesn't really matter. After a few posts it will devolve into a mac users are dumb discussion.

Sit back and watch thread explode with hate.

Is that about right?

I know about the buttonless part, that's why I put 'buttons' inside quotes.

What I'm saying is that while they look like a one piece trackpad you can still emulate 'left click' and 'right click' by pushing the bottom left/right corners of the trackpad.

Huh so they actually did start selling the Macbook Wheel?
