WTF is up with these new apple stickers?

JBT

Lifer
The last two days my wife has sent along an apple for a snack.

I grab it out of my lunch bag and run it under the sink.

I then attempt to peel the sticker off, but no, this is a new type of sticker that does not have a plastic type seal over it or is not 100% plastic. Its purely a light layer of paper and sticky stuff underneath it. The Paper soaks up the water then smears across the apple instead of easily peeling off..

I then have to spend another 2-3 minutes trying to get the glue mess off the apple. I even tried a little soap and still no luck. I mostly got it off but I'm sure I'm eating more glue than I would have with the other style sticker.

Red Declicious? ugghh yuck no, I've graduated from Middle School. I don't recall what kind of apple it is. I think maybe Gala?

IronWing, I'll try that next time, but I doubt I'll remember.

just bite around the label and take the whole chunk out with your teeth, and spit the label/apple chunk into the garbage.

I was wondering why there were apples attached to the stickers I bought. I guess your way makes more sense.

I've never seen a label that wasn't like that.

Also, red delicious is the only editable apple.

Honeycrips are flat-out amazing. There's nothing wrong with a Red or Golden Delicious, but man, next to a Honeycrisp it's like the difference between Sarah Silverman and Gisele Bundchen.

Stick to the tried and true Macintosh apples. then gala. Red delicious is only good for pies.

Indeed.

I mostly stick to Gala and Honeycrisp anymore. Since I've discovered those, there is no turning back. Crisp and deliciously juicy, like cider flavor but delivered in apple form. Snappy crisp, but quickly transforms into an easy chew.

Red delicious, at least the majority I've had in the past few years, just seem too damn mealy. The flavor and juice is kind of boring as well, but by far the worst offense is the mealy texture. It's like a soggy-style of crisp, and too chewy to be called tender.
After experiencing apple perfection, that's really the only way I can describe the lesser apples. They just feel wrong. 🙁

Macs are the best apples out there. But they have a short season, you can't just throw them in the fridge and sell them 8 months later like you can with Delicious Apples.

Macs, Empire, Gala, Jonah gold, Honeycrisp... virtually all beat red delicious hands down.

Red delicious is only for when there are no other apples in season, somewhere.

There is a reason Red Delicious doesn't taste like it used to, it isn't just in your head:

Who's to blame for the decline of Red Delicious? Everyone, it seems. Consumers were drawn to the eye candy of brilliantly red apples, so supermarket chains paid more for them. Thus, breeders and nurseries patented and propagated the most rubied mutations, or "sports," that they could find, and growers bought them by the millions, knowing that these thick-skinned wonders also would store for ages....

....Growers test for optimum conditions, but today's popular strains of Red Delicious turn color two to three weeks before harvest, making it difficult for pickers to distinguish an apple that is ready from one that isn't.

Some strains "develop full red color in mid-August," said Stephen S. Miller, a research horticulturist for the USDA's Appalachian Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville, W.Va. "Physiologically, that apple is still as green as grass

Just got home it was indeed a Gala like I had thought.

The sticker also comes right off when its not wet. I guess I'll have to find the sticker first. Shouldn't be hard but its just not what I've done, and never had any issues before this.

Did anyone else assume the OP was referring to Apple Computer stickers?

/me raises his hand.

Yep...I was looking for all the replies about how it helps people easily find the pretentious, hipster, douche bags...:sneaky:

(I really don't care about Apple owners and they don't bother me, but so many here have to voice their displeasure with anything and anyone Apple)

Why would you even think to rinse it and THEN peel the sticker?

HINT: Pesticides were applied before the sticker was applied. Don't bother rinsing until you've removed the sticker. Sheesh.
