WTF is up with resolutions in games?

I know this could technically go in the software forum, but its nightcrew time and its more general than one game. So deal with it 😉

How come so many games don't have an option for 1280 x 1024(LCD) but you can FORCE it to display in this resolution by editing the .INI files of the games.

I have changed the following games settings to allow for 1280 x 1024:

Rollercoaster Tycoon 3
Sid Meier's Pirates
Command and Conquer generals and zero hour

Anyone have any idea why the option just isn't put into the game in the first place?

Am I distorting the game by doing this? It doesn't appear that way. Just looks like as if they had the option for 1280 x 1024

it doesnt appear that way coz your monitor is built to show 10x12 correctly, the monitor is physically 5:4 ratio so it looks ok

if u put that on a 4:3 CRT it wouldnt look quiet right

well right, but I am just trying to figure out what is the reason they wouldn't put the option in every game. Why must I go and change the data files themselves to achieve this resolution. Theres gotta be some reason for keeping us LCD from having native resolution....or are the programmer just lazy

think it is just down to the fact that

tft's arent 5:4 (not 17inch n 19inch ones anyway) its not a common ratio

plus when you think about it, the number of people who game at 12x9 and above is nothing compared to those that game at 10x7 and below. not only that TFT's havent started to become the norm yet....there are still more people with CRT monitors

so 12x10 resolution isnt really a common one at all

tho having said that, all the games i have, bar generals, have a 12x10 option

i would, but i dont really play it anymore, and ea are pretty crap

I have a related question. When you run a game in 1280x1024 instead of 1280x960, are you seeing more? What about widescreen? Does the game give you a wider field of view? This could be pretty important in FPSes.

I would suppose you would have to see more. I don't see anyway to convert. This is why I wondered if I forced it if it would have any negative affects.
