Every single godamn play, a ref needs to whistle and call a foul. This is just bullshit. What were there around 30-40 fouls in this Cavs/Magic game?

Dwight Howard made a perfect clean block from behind on Lebron, ref calls a fucking foul. WTF?

Is it just me or does anyone else feel this way?

Dude this is the first game that has been called like this. I dont remember another game with so many foul calls, besides the 2006 playoffs with the heat and the mavericks.

Oh and BTW there is a stickied NBA playoffs thread.

Compared to the 90s, I think the # of fouls called has risen dramatically, no?

I think that 'foul' where Howard blocked Lebron from behind pretty much summarizes the sate of officiating in the NBA.

The refs totally need to fucking chill, seriously. There's no such thing as a legit block anymore.

I found it funny that the officials were reviewing the videos to check where his foot was to confirm 3pt shot, but they didn't reverse the foul even though it was clean block.

There was only one fewer foul called in yesterday's Nugs/Lakers game.

Fouls are not reviewable.

Looking at the foul count in the other finals games, 58 isn't all that much more, except for game 1 of the cavs/magic.

Part of the problem is that NBA athletes have gotten bigger, faster, stronger, yet the size of the court is the same as it's always been. So there's more congestion, and thus more contact. And, the officials just can't keep up.

Also, I think with Jordan's ascendancy in the late 80's, the idea of the "protected" superstar took hold. David Stern knows that the NBA is more about individual players than other team sports, and thus the superstars get preferential treatment. That leads to more fouls.

There were a lot of foul calls in the 90's. 90's basketball was very slow and very physical. Pistons, Knicks and Heat would mug the opposition. 90's basketball also featured a closer 3-pt line than today, which packed offenses in tighter to the basket, creating even more congestion. Also, 90's basketball was more coach-controlled in terms of on-court plays. There were fewer possessions per game because most teams were reluctant to fast-break, and instead would have the point guard slowly walk the ball up court and get the next play from the coach.

The number of fouls can be reduced if the players stay more focused in every game, but it's not always easy. Other then that, most fouls aren't intentional and normally they can occur at any time.

that's the problem with basketball. I'm just a casual watcher (at least I used to be) and everytime someone drives the lane it's a foul. Snorethrows ensue. It's worse than repeated foul balls in baseball.
