Also suspected of driving over a black kid

In case you were thinking it's just male homo sapiens who get insanely violent...

Yeah, there's this Iowan woman... we have another example near me from around a week ago:

Bay Area woman runs over barber because she doesn't like the haircut he gave to her son.

She was trying to kill him, it was clear to him. Came close to it.

You put some people in a car and they just go nuts. FYI.

Seems pretty excessive, but then I can't really blame people for getting pissed over almost losing their church like that either. Burning churches in specific neighborhoods was all the rage for awhile in this country. Lots of churches are 100+ years old. Nice and dry with large open spaces inside, old wiring. The risk of losing them is great enough with bigoted assholes putting a lighter to em. I'm also not a fan of ignoring recidivism.

And yeah, I just defended christian places of worship. Merry Xmas everyone! :)

iOwa once was a blue state but turned hard red in 2016.
THAT has a lot to do with the states new found insanity.
Seriously.... the entire state is freakin NUTZ.

Just how nutz are they?
The type of nutz that listens to the Donald Trump's and believes his every delusional word.
It's truly a sad thing to watch.

Take another incident in iOwa with an illegal working as a hired hand on a republican family farm.
The farmer was a Trumpie republican yet needed that cheap illegal farm labor.
As all iOwa republican farm owners need.
The illegal hired to work on that farm murdered a young girl out for a simple jog one afternoon.
The murder trial is ongoing.
YET.... no one is asking the big question WHY AND HOW WAS THIS ILLEGAL GUY HIRED IN THE FIRST PLACE?
The farmer claimed HE DIDN'T KNOW..... naturally.
That Trumpie republican farm owner knew...
He damn well knew his employee was illegal because the farmer hired him with no papers, with proof of citizenship, and not one attempt to E-verify the guy.

iOwa is a farm state. A republican state.
The kind of state that elects the Steve King's, the Joni Ernst's, and the Chuck Grassley's.
Need we say more?

I get that the guy is a dickbag but that shouldn't deserve a 15 year sentence.
I mean it's no loss to society, in fact it's a positive, but I'm not comfortable with locking people up for 15 years for being an arsehole.

According to Snopes he had 2 prior felonies & was prosecuted as a habitual offender, which triples the sentence in Iowa-

I don't really agree with the stiff sentences given to habitual offenders in a lot of circumstances but this guy DGAF so they hammered him.

Sounds like he stole the flag then burnt it outside a bar. Charging someone for arson for that is ridiculous.
I dont like the guy, and I hate his views but I wouldn't want to be up on any charges in a legal system that works that way.

In Texas, they shoot barbers, don't they?

Yeah, I agree. Burning a flag isn't arson, unless they use the burning flag to attempt to start a larger fire. I thought we had already been done this path with the US flag, after USSC said flag burning was protected speech a lot of states then tried the arson route and got knocked down.

This sounds like pity theft and/or vandalism, regardless of how big of an asshole the guy is.

Yep, it's where the Nunes family dairy farm has moved from California and they hire illegals for help and it's in Steve King's district.

There are people doing 99 years for one joint in Texas under their "3 strikes" law.

AND

Stealing one slice of pizza results in life sentence

TORRANCE - A man who stole a piece of pizza last summer has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, sparking renewed debate over the state's tough "three strikes" sentencing law.

Jerry Dewayne Williams, 27, of Los Angeles was convicted of felony petty theft in January for taking a slice of pepperoni pizza from a group of children, ages 7 to 14, eating at Adam's Pizza on the Redondo Beach pier on July 30.

Superior Court Judge Donald Pitts imposed the stiff sentence on Williams, who had four previous felony convictions, after rejecting his attorney's argument that the punishment did not fit the crime. "Mr. Williams will be facing the same sentence as if he'd raped a woman, molested a child or done a carjacking because the statute does not draw distinctions," said Arnold Lester, Williams' public defender.

Prosecutors had requested the prison term because Williams had prior convictions for robbery, attempted robbery, drug possession and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

During Williams' trial, prosecutors argued the petty crime was a case of robbery by intimidation. Deputy District Attorney Bill Gravelin said Williams
"proceeded to victimize and to bully these vulnerable children" and that the law was specifically aimed at punishing repeat offenders like him.

Williams, who testified in his own defense during his trial, testified that some of the children nodded their heads "yes" when he asked them for a slice of pizza and that he thanked them for it.

But a 13-year-old boy in the group testified: "I was scared."

Lester contended that his client made no threat and was only playing an immature game of "Truth of Dare" with a friend fueled by an afternoon of beer drinking. While petty theft is typically a misdemeanor charge, Williams' earlier convictions allowed prosecutors to upgrade it to a felony.

Previous serious felonies<
And under the state's three strikes law, two of the crimes - robbery and attempted robbery - were serious felonies that made Williams liable to a sentence of 25 years to life on his next serious conviction. Petty theft is included in that category.

Opponents of the three strikes law said Williams' case is an example of arbitrary prosecution under the guidelines, which they say could also boost prison costs.

"No matter how many pizza thieves it sends to prison, this law is not going to make our streets safer," said Allan Parachini of the American Civil Liberties Union.

California's three strikes law enacted last year requires longer sentences for felons with at least one prior conviction for a serious or violent felony.
Defendants with two previous serious or violent felonies, for instance, face sentences of 25 years to life for any third felony.

So far, the vast majority of defendants convicted under the 10-month-old statute have committed nonviolent crimes, according to studies released by the state's non-partisan legislative analyst in January.

Of the nearly 3,000 inmates convicted of a second or third strike through November 1994, more than 82 percent are behind bars for crimes not labeled serious or violent by the act, the legislative analyst, Elizabeth Hill said. The most common offenses were drug violations or petty thefts.

Parole after 20 years
Williams will not be eligible for parole until he serves 20 years of his sentence, Lester said.

Lester said Williams was unhappy but had resigned himself to the sentence he received. He vowed to appeal it. But a Redondo Beach resident who sat through Williams' trial voiced support for longer sentences.

"It's like, hey, this guy's had five chances and he still goes out and commits a crime," Heling Craig said.

So is the homophobe hispanic? Does that mean the racist would want to run him over?

The flag-burning sentence seems high, but seems as if that's down to the stupid 'three strikes' thing. Was going to mention the pizza slice case. I don't agree with those sorts of laws - just give people the sentence appropriate for the crime they're being sentenced for.

If that's not a ready-made excuse to go hogwild, I don't know what is. Rape some women, maybe a couple of teen girls, Rob a few banks. Shoot up a mall, kill your judge!

It doesn't matter! You'll get the same sentence either way. If you're going to go out,

GO OUT BIG!

well, it did say "about" 15 years...whatever that means.

but yeah, that seems nuts
I just fucking hate many aspects of our 'justice' system. If you are stupid, poor, mentally ill or a minority you get a royal screwing by the system. Three strikes and habitual offender laws need to go the way of the dinosaurs - they are there to make people in 'nice' , aka white, neighborhoods feel safe and to line the pockets of private prisons.

The United States has the best justice system money can buy.

Agreed, in the main, but:
He's a habitual offender who showed zero remorse. He's likely to graduate to -- Oh, I don't know, running over a young girl because she's Mexican or Gay?
He hasn't been sentenced. 15 years is the maximum, recommended by the DA. He'll almost assuredly get less, and then, before serving his sentence, be invited to the Offal Office by President Unflushed Floater.

He hasn't been sentenced. See above. But your tender concern for this habitual offender who defiantly showed zero lack of remorse and PROUDLY pleaded guilty is duly noted.
