????

Gas in Edmonton is $4.05 per US gallon and there are still cars everywhere. Back in 2008 or so, gas was $4.70 and that didn't seem to reduce traffic in any way. People don't drive to work because they want to drive. It's because they need to drive.

What do they drive 2 miles?

A lot of people learned their lesson on SUV's and trucks, not as many people that don't need them drive them anymore.

I see a lot of new shiny giant SUVs and trucks on the road along with the new gas guzzlers like Mustangs, Chargers etc that the manufacturers have been hawking on commercials.

In fact there is a 4.0 L Caravan of all things.

The commercial says "You don't have to sacrifice power for convenience".

Yeah sure while you feed the Republican Oil/Gas beast. Suckas

I like to see the face of giant SUV drivers when the pump stops

In fact there are many of those giant SUV drivers on here 😀

I have seen people with huge suv's and I walked by the gas pump and it says $90. I just can't imagine the pain of doing that on a regular basis.

Wow some people here are ignorant... (looks up).

Fact is SUV's can do things other vehicles can't. It pulls my boat with the wife, kids, dogs, and everything else we take with us. Also pulls my camper with tent, Sleeping bags and all other gear. Some things in life need a bigger vehicle with a bigger engine. I love driving my '68 Stang with the tag "Suckin' gas & haulin' ass".

4,30 for premium in cupertino, i filled up my tank today for 3.79 . I am gonna start using my motorcycle from monday. fuck this car driving business.

You and me both brutha. Got a spare set of tires in the garage and when I see some on sale I'm getting another set. I'm putting some miles on my bike this year. Well I actually put lots of miles on my bike every year.🙂 this year I'm going hardcore though. Feels so much nicer filling the tank for $10.

yeah, i love toys and luxuries too.

I personally like keeping the money I earn. What are you compensating for? I don't have to have a big truck and a boat to feel special. That's little man syndrome. I just laugh at guys like you. Hell you probably had a Hummer til the last oil crisis hit and you had to sell it for pennies on the dollar. If you can afford $100 bill Everytime you stop for gas then enjoy. I'll be thinking of you when I'm retired and you are still working til your 80 years old.

No. I mean mass-produced electric vehicles with a decently long range and short charging times (i.e. not 6-8 hours).

The Volt is a hybrid-electric, which still uses an internal combustion engine.

The Leaf is all-electric, but it is not yet available in Canada. In fact, of the few highway-capable, fully-electric vehicles in production, none are yet available in Canada.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Currently_available_electric_cars

Its just a matter of time. Don't act like what you want doesn't exist. They do, just not where you live right now.

It's a misnomer to call the Volt a hybrid. It's not meant for long-haul stuff, and its a plug in. On the off chance you need to run more than 35 miles or so the motor keeps you from getting stranded. It isn't like the prius at all and normally if you run round town it'll never turn on the motor.

Sorry to see you are in Canada. Cold isn't the best market for electrics so maybe if you move out of the sticks (hockey) you can enjoy the all-electric love we are getting so soon.

6-8 hours of charging IS the norm and its doable for most people. 200 miles of range on a Leaf is plenty for that 6-8 hours. Volts need even less charging time. You go home, plug in, by the time you wake up its charged. Whats the issue? You won't be taking long 500 mile trips in your car anymore thats all. You would have a gas burner if thats what is important to you. Who drives that far anymore anyways?

Oh and if you regularly need to drive 20 miles or more 1 way - look to the Leaf, but more than likely an electric just isn't for you.

Electric won't help when you can afford the electric bill.

Monthly bills will be north of $600

Your bill is zero when the meter is not turning. That's exactly what happens when there are rolling blackouts because there is not enough power to go around. 😉

If the private sector cannot build enough capacity then it must be time for the Government to build power plants that can provide enough capacity.

Be careful what you wish for

I'm sorry but a stupid little putt-putt car wouldn't cut it for my job. I've had my SUV full of equipment I've transported, and just this week drove through a snowstorm where the 4x4 and ground clearance made it easier and safer.

Screw you liberal types who want to limit freedom in this country.

Once again, you're being ignorant. I am not compensating for anything. Having a larger vehicle doesn't mean you are compensating for anything. I am not short, or little. I have driven a hummer many times (real hummer) but never owned one. I can afford the bill at the pump, and taxpayers pay for my to and from work gas. I have two retirements, thank you for caring though. I'll receive both before I turn 60. Plus my 401K.

Fact is, you can't do what I do, with a smaller vehicle. I enjoy being outside, camping and boating.

Also, it's "you're" not "your". Try learning 3rd grade grammar before you tell me that you are smarter than me.

Newsflash, there is no such thing as freedom

Of course, Dave is too stupid to realize the rise in gas prices affects more than one's vehicle but the price of goods and services. But then again, Dave is a mental midget.

I'm actually going SUV shopping today. As Ackmed mentioned, cars can't do everything.

Well in the communistic world that you seem to want, of course there isn't. But I believe in what this country was founded upon, and what the founding fathers gave us, not what the likes of you are trying to change it into

Good hope you pay more than you wanted to

Depends if I want to go luxury or not but I'm not stupid like you and already have everything priced out. Just need to decide how much I want to spend. Sucks to be poor like you.

When I fill-up once a month, mpg isn't my highest priority.

Actually isn't your government purposely choking off development of nuke sites to promote dino power generation? It takes many years to get a nuke plant operational as well.

I guess the distributed computing guys will have to unplug their computers so they can charge their cars! 😀

Perfectly fine with me. I pay $190/month in the winter and $280/month in the summer to run my home. I pay $180/month in gasoline. Thats close to $500 between electric and gas. I'd gladly pay the electric company more than the oil companies, though thats choosing between devils I guess right?

I did the math and right about now - the cost per mile is only about 50% more with a Leaf than it is with gasoline. It is surely within reach.

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-20023635-48.html

24kwh/charge in 8 hours = $3.60 per full charge. That is using $0.15/kwh - and that is more than what I pay. 100 miles per charge gets us to: 3.6c per mile.

$45.76 per full tank (13.5G at $3.39) on the pt cruiser I drive now - gets me 250 miles.
1.8c per mile.

Ruby's exactly right on a couple points too sadly:

Actually isn't your government purposely choking off development of nuke sites to promote dino power generation?
