Wtf is up with crucial?

i go to their site and wanna buy some memory. Then i gotta go thru that extremely annoying selector thingy they got. you know... desktop -> mobo type -> model ...
anyway, do they have a list of memory somewhere? Just a list, no annoying a$$ helper involved?

My problem is, i build my own.. so i dont have a "model"... so what the hell? I feel like a newb here, but i cant find a plain old list anywhere

On step 1 of the memory selector, select "Motherboards and RAID cards" instead of "Personal Computing". Then after selecting your motherboard manufacturer and model, Crucial will give you a list of compatible memory. They probably did it this way so it would be completely idiot proof.....I guess it didn't work. 😉

socketman, if you build your own, you can still make good use of that memory selector. It lets you pick your motherboard manufacterer and model. You can still jump directly to the memory type if you wish.

You can select it by your brand of motherboard. I build also, and I like this feature. Unfortunately Crucial isn't one of the best anymore and seems overpriced now.

use the "Or search by standard memory type
or Crucial part number. "

then pick the kind of memory you need, that's what I did when I ordered mine.

You should, because the link is right on the front page, directly under the "Start Here" pulldown menu labeled:

"Or search by standard memory type or Crucial part number."

I don't think they can make it much easier.

Yep. This is as easy as it gets, but maybe (just maybe) you were unaware to look for memory this way (by mobo manufacturer, then model) so I'll cut you a bit of slack. 😉 Astute users are thankful that they offer such a wide range of choices instead of saying "PC133/256mb...buy it now!:" like the majority of sites out there. Chances are; if you need any kind of memory, Crucial has it.

Crucial is a direct seller (I think they ARE...) Micron Inc. Micron is one of the biggest manufacturers/suppliers of system memory in the WORLD. How much better do you want?

Note: Compatibility is only guaranteed for modules ordered using the Crucial Memory Selector?. Returned orders placed through the advanced search options may be subject to a 20% restocking fee.

Excellent point KingOfComputer. I was reading this thread, and didn't even know this!!! Kudos!!

Anybody that tries to order memory through the advanced option without actually knowing what they need to get deserves to be charged a fee.

I figure if you are astute enough to figure out your motherboard model, you can figure out the exact type of memory needed. And if you bought a system from a system builder but don't know the parts that are in it, then you shouldn't be trying to buy memory for it.

I bought a 128MB DIMM (for a RAID card) from Crucial but it had only 9 devices, and my card saw only 64MB. I called Crucial support and was told to re-order using a special part number that could not be specified on their web-based order form. They took the 9-device part back for full credit and shipped me the 18-device part that I needed. So they are not total sticklers on dinging you if you get the wrong part...

128MB DDR PC2100 16x64
Newegg: $40 plus $6 shipping
Crucial: $34.19 plus a $5 coupon comes up (don't know if that's random or for everyone on that part number)

256MB PC2100 32x64
Newegg: $47 plus $6 shipping
Crucial: $63.89 plus a $15 coupon

512MB PC2100 64x64
Newegg: $124 plus $6 shipping
Crucial: $159 plus $20 coupon

Note that Crucial ships everything 2-day FedEx in the contiguous US for free (and has been saying forever "limited time").

Similar pricing differences appears with PC133 modules.

So, no, Newegg doesn't always have better prices than Crucial on Crucial memory. In some cases they're slightly lower, but you have to pay shipping. (Some might say Crucial is making up for the shipping with higher cost, but they're not so much higher that they're really making up for total shipping costs compared to other vendors.) As always, go with the place that has what you want at the price you want, combined with whatever convenience factor you find. I often will pay slightly more to buy everything from Newegg or Mwave so it's all shipped at the same time, but with Crucial that's not an issue, since they've yet to take more than 20 hours to get a package to me.

I've had memory arrive at my door 20 hours and even 17 hours after having ordered it online. They must be next door to a FedEx shipping office or something, but even then, getting packages shipped by 2-Day Air and having it arrive in less than one day is pretty good.
