so the sign said 3.89 and when I used the CC it was $3.95, then there is a little readout thing that says

Cash: $3.89
Credit: $3.95

so this is the new scheme that they are doing these days?!?!

big surprise.

LOL.........

anywho because they have to pay the credit card companies to use the credit cards. If you use cash it goes directly to them. I've been seeing this all over

I first noticed it in truck stops.

They did this years ago...
and then they stopped
and now they've started doing it again
because profit margins on gas are pretty thin
and credit card processing fees take a big chunk

This is the first time you've seen this at a gas station?

Interestingly, I believe that it is against the TOS for Visa and Mastercard for retailers to add a "credit surcharge" to purchasers who buy with credit cards. It is not, however, a violation of the TOS to offer a "cash discount". This is the loophole in the TOS that gas stations use to set different prices for cash and credit.

AFAIK, this is actually against the ToS for every major credit card.

Visa and Mastercard allow it if it's phrased as a cash discount
American Express allows it as long as it applies to every non-cash form of payment

They just started doing this again recently. About 6 months ago IIRC is when I first started seeing it around here.

I refuse to go to stations that have this BS. There are a few that are the same cash/credit and if I have to pay a few extra cents I will do so.

Why? 😕

I filled up the other day at a Sunoco that displayed the credit card price and then discounted $.05 if you paid cash. I'd much rather if the stations display the highest price on their signs and then discount from that point.

Why? Because the gas station loses money when you buy small quantities of gas with a credit card?

I can understand it. When the store owner only makes 5 cents profit (and that's generous) on every gallon, and I pull up with my motorcycle and take 3 gallons with a credit card....30 cents goes to the credit card company. The owner has lost money because of me.

It's simple really.

This two price scheme has been around for years but not all around the country. I don't worry about it since I get a 5% discount from my CC bank on gas purchases.

At least it's not as bad as when they put up a price and then in smaller print below it the real price w/out carwash, card offer, ect...

That's cheap, most station here it's either 10 or 20 cents difference

Because the price for super is clearly listed on the road signage and I can see it from far enough away and that way I always know what I am paying.

Many stations are changing to a $3 flat fee for using plastic.

I am sure this "fee" will continue to go up.

Doesn't it save them money to use a CC because it saves them from dealing with cash? I read an example about how much cash wal*mart would have to deal with on a national level if everyone used CC's. It was a while ago, but the point made was that it actually saves them money even though it costs a fee.

I guess that gas stations might just not have nearly as much of it to deal with?
