wtf is this?

Easy question.

That is very clearly a micro-pictograph of steel. You can very clearly see the layered pearlite crystalline structure(where the black stuff is) intermixed with a bainite matrix. It looks to me like a relatively high carbon steel, perhaps SAE 1045 or 1060, but it's hard to tell especially since we don't know anything about the processing that metal went through. I'd guess it was normalized... it sure wasn't quenched.

it's one of those pictures where after you stare at it for a few minutes, you see an image... I see an iguana wearing a sombrero

Black stuff is pearlite, and the other is ferrite. I think it was a 1020 steel but I'm not sure. Fairly low carbon content. Should've paid attention in lab LOL 😛

I was checking my pics and I was like holy crap how come there is a thread about it? Magnification is at 1500x.
