The same thing that causes people to slow down and look at car accidents or even look down at their own poop is the same thing that drives people into their living rooms to watch "reality" shows.
You can blame the Screen Writes Guild strike for the plethora of "reality" shows. All you need is a camera crew and an editor and you're in business. I was given a prospectus for the "Cheaters" show by a friend of mine who works in Hollywood. They stated it specifically in the text.
