Just noticed this on one of my rotors that less than 30k miles on them:

woahrotor_zps064287bd.jpg

Did it just rust out?

Update:

Fired off an email around 9:50 Monday night and got a response in less than 15mins from tech support. Whole thing was resolved with a few short emails in less than an hour. The replacements were shipped out yesterday morning.

Whether they are "junk" or not I don't know. What I do know is they've worked fine and when an issue did pop up the company stood behind the product with zero hassle. Its been the best customer service experience I've ever had.

looks like there may have been a small imperfection in it that started rusting, and then it rusted through and the rusted bits fell out. very odd.

Brake rotors are cast. There was a void in the casting that did not become apparent until it got a little worn and heat cycled multiple times. I highly doubt it will give you any problems but if it's under warranty I'm sure they'll replace it. If not, have it replaced it if worries you.

take car back to dealer if its origina rotor otherwise to the auto parts store. That is dangerous.

I wouldn't trust those rotors. See if the current mfg folks will do something for you.

YOu are going to need a new rotor. YOu can also write the manufacturer and show them the pictures. They might give you a new one. Its worth a shot.

Fixed that for you. You should always replace brake rotors in pairs.

Yeah I would never replace just one even if only one is all they offer to replace.

Search 'centric rotors.' Somebody else posted about rotors with casting flaws and/or some ragged machining, IIRC. I believe they contacted the manufacturer (centric) and got new ones for free.

How do you get rotors to last 3 years?? lol. Guess I do over load my car and drive 100 miles a day..

I would replace it, but then again I do my rotors about every other set of pads.

I bought my car brand new in 2005.....just did pads and rotors for the first time in November of 2012. They were still in great shape, but I thought it was time to change them.

Yeah centric is junk. I usually go for Wagner or Raybestos. A little more money but better parts.

On my last Altima the 1st set of pads were replaced @ 105k miles and the 2nd @ 190k miles...when it got totaled @ 195k it was still running on the factory OEM rotors.

Nasty! Just put some of those on my friends '09 Altima this past weekend. Hopefully no issues with them. The car stops great for now at least.

was a wave of casting issues a while back. I have become very picky about what rotors I use on my personal cars these days. Even some stuff you get OEM like stock infinity is trash unless you have a brembo package.

QC seems down industry wide the last few years outside of the upper tiers. Chinese rotors and tires is like playing russian roullete. You will probably be fine 5/6 times.

could always be replicators from sg1 however :p

I very much agree with this. We have a couple of outspoken members (one of which is actually a mechanic...) who vehemently swear that it makes no difference who you buy your rotor from... That the cheap chinese junk is identical to quality napa premium etc... I guess they believe there is only one 'rotor foundry' in china.

I believe what I said was essentially 'I have not observed any demonstrable difference.' You said you had. I said, okay; demonstrate. And I believe you then put a lampshade on your head and stood in the corner. ;P
