WTF is This - 130fps Quake 3 Arena time demo ???

i was bored and installed quake 3 arena and the fscrusher time demo.

my machine is a 2.8c / 512MB PC3200(normally 1GB but other stick is currently in other computer) / 9800Pro / 10Krpm u160 SCSI HDD / i865pe MB.

all it hits is 130fps either at 800x600 with basic settings or 1600x1200 with all setting maxed. i am just wondering why it is going any faster than 130fps.

it is not the fps that i care about, i really don't care what it is as long as it is playable, and yes 130fps is definately playable, i am just wondering why there is no change in fps when i change to different resolutions and settings.

Perhaps it's capped at 130 fps?

i didn't think it was as i have seen benchmarks with it showing 250+fps. if it is capped, anybody know how to uncap it?

130fps lol in cs that would be good but i never played quake 3 i dont know how many frames you should get but i play with 13 in cs 1.6 so consider yourself lucky

On my XP 1800+ I get 170fps in quake 3. (640x480) I have a Geforce ti4200. I've seen some crazy figures out there for Q3, but I've never been able to get anywhere near them. I'm curious myself exacltly how reviewers come up with some of these numbers.

Your frames are capped. Check your games config file for a max_fps and set it to 0. It'll probably be seta_max_fps or something like that.

in the cfg file, the only thing that resembles this is "seta com_maxfps "85", i changed it to 0 and still the same....

it not changing between 800x600 and 1600x1200 suggests either cpu bottleneck or an artificial ceiling on FPS.

Not meaning to be insulting or anything, it'd be an easy miss - make sure vsync is off in driver settings for opengl rather than directx settings. hell, make sure it's off for both.

make a new text file in "baseQ3" or whatever the folder is where most of the .pk3 files are at. edit in the following lines:
set com_maxfps "0"
set com_hunkMegs "128"
now save, and rename it to "autoexec.cfg", making sure it's not "autoexec.cfg.txt" if you have Windows set to hide known file extenstions.

(could have sworn there was a game cvar for vsync, but damned if I can see it)

I doubt his refresh rate is 130HZ especially at 1600x1200. I wonder if it's something to do with the benchmark. Try another demo and see what kind of scores you get.

i gave this a try and still the same. thanks for all the help but i think i will just forget about it as i get 17000+ and ~6000 on 3dmark02,03 so i know it is doing good. just was wondering how all of those websites say they get the quake demo to run at 300+fps. i can run mine in 320x240 all the way up to 1600x1200 and get 130 all the time.

thanks again for the help all 😉

just did that, thanks, i got 220fps @ 1600x1200 with all settings maxed...

Careful when you say all settings maxed guys. Do you mean all in game settings only? Or do you have the card set to 8x FSAA and 16x aniso too? Sound?

maxed out in the game, when i switched the aa and fsaa to max (6 and 16) it hit 175fps.

quake three is such a good game. I remember getting 30ish fps or so on my 233k6 with 16 meg savage 4 at 1024*768...soo smooth...
more than i can say for UT which was funner but chugged more and always had to turn down the settings~

Yeah, I remember in the day overclocking my k6-2 350mhz and my Diamond Monster Fusion (Voodoo Banshee) to get as many framerates as possible out the game.

q3 does cap it's FPS, check the q3config.cfg file, also might just be the refresh rate of your monitor

you should be able to get 250+ in that game now 🙂

I remember the last time I really was into q3, I had a Ti200 and it ran like butter on that card.
