I find drinking to be bad.

But not an obsession with a woman you can never have?

As for the ACTUAL thread topic, a smoker friend with which I have spoken told me that it's the head rush that got him started. He also dislikes the habit, but dislikes the withdrawals even more.

Ownership of the married man. :D

Tobacco ingredients, additives, and radioactivity..

Two of the 700 additives in cigarettes are sclareol, which causes seizures in

laboratory rats, and ethylfuroate, which was investigated in the 1930's as a possible

chemical warfare agent.

American Medical News, May 2, 1994

A two pack a day smoker takes 400 puffs a day and inhales 1000 milligrams (one

gram) of tar. This is 150,000 puffs and a quart of thick brown gooey carcinogenic tar

inhaled into the lungs each year.

You realize I could make a chocolate cake out of the ingredients too?

List the ingredients.

It's a stimulant. That stimulation that most people enjoy initially, becomes an addiction over time.

Yesterday we were in the halls at my college due to a tornado warning. Small slushy dime sized hail was falling, wind was blowing a good bit. We were packed into the hallways and someone said "look outside", i looked out the glass door and some people were outside in the hail huddled over trying to smoke.

Being exposed to radioactive material in moderation isn't going to kill you but that doesn't make it a GOOD EFFING IDEA

I swear I'm not complaining about the fact that people do smoke, I just don't understand why...smokers care to respond?

You do get a buzz from smoking.

Smoking and drinking go hand in hand.

I do neither :Q

(I'm 21 at UW-Madison, so this seems hard to believe by many people I've met)

There are a lot of people me included that have a cigarette every now and then when we drinking. Would I consider myself? I no means. The thing is, I think a lot of people are like this. They smoke when they drink.

Wow. All those responses and no one actually trying to explain why some people enjoy smoking. Man we really do have a bunch of squeaky clean do-gooders checking in here.

Ok I don't even smoke anymore, but I'll attempt to explain why some people enjoy it.

After a long day at work, a round of golf, a few beers - nothing goes down like a nice cigarette. It's sort of a relaxation thing. When you light up, take a pull and exhale, you're just telling the world (esp. the non-smokers), "I don't give a fsck. Yeah that's right I LOVE this cigarette. LOVE IT." It's almost a state of mind to tell you the truth. Over the years smoking has been associated with being "cool" a la James Dean. I'm sure there is a sense of belonging among the ranks of the smokers which is obviously an additional draw to that lifestyle.

Of course, once you get addicted to anything, you don't really need a reason to do it anymore. You just do it.

i miss smoking when i'm in the car for 30+ minutes

i also miss it when i'm studying or working really hard on a project. since we never smoked in any of our houses apartments, it was a great way to get away from what i was doing, go outside, walk around a bit, let my mind wander, get a tiny buzz, etc.

i swear i'm less healthy now that i quit since i don't go outside as much

Haha, well put.
I've had non-smokers tell me they want to have a smoke when they see mee totally kick-back with a smoke and a beer.

you cannot smoke in bars in Connecticut or New york.

My bar experience has been excellent since then.

Stimulant? when I've tried smoking it doesnt stimulate anything. I feel terrible for about 5 days afterwards. Thats why I only smoke (and its only been 3 times) to fit in talking to girls. The smell stinks, (although, I do smoke cigars every once in a while, those smell ok) and I praise the fact that where I live its illegal to smoke in any enclosed public space (and I enforce that law too). Its great to go to a bar now and not come out reaking like smoke!!!!

Actually smoking does get you high. theres also the niceness of having something to do, if your fidget allot its really nice. and who cares if it kills you, you're gonna die anyway, so you loose 3 years of your life. big deal. given i dont like smoke in the bars, but i dont have to deal with that cuz i'm in VT, can't smoke in the bars here. and no i dont smoke, but i have friends who do and i've asked them this. allot of times they just say they like it and they dont want to quite. and the one's who have say they miss the act of smoking more then the smoke itself.

i love cigars. esp. the wine-tipped ones on the golf course. truly one of the pleasures of life i have come to appreciate. walking down a fairway, looking at your ball sitting centre-cut on a bright sunny day... beer in one hand, cigar in the yapper, towing the pull cart along. omg i think i'm getting wood.

seriously though - it is kind of disturbing when you see a 350-lb fat chick hauling on a ciggy. here, here's a gun - fast forward to your inevitable conclusion...
