WTF is Russia Doing in Kabul?

EXman

Lifer
They entered Kabul w/o telling a soul. Hours after making sure the US would not seek tougher sanctions on IRAQI oil for food/medicine and extend a 6 month extension on the liberal policy that now exsists. Is there a Qwib Pro Quo or whatever going on here? Or are they pulling that we'll take the Kosovo Airport crap again remember that? Just Grand Standing? Maybe they just see this as the only way to Kabul after the Afgans spanked them for so long?

Better watch out the "evil empire" might not be as Dead as we thought.:disgust:

Evil Empire talk already? 🙂
Relax, Russia is toothles in terms of being able to project power globally. This is just 300 man Humanitarian Aid force--though I did notice some light anti-tank weapons on CNN.
Russia needs us, this is a "show" of support.

<< i had heard that they were setting up medical camps >>

after the war between the two nations I think that would be like the Germans setting up camps in Israel not long after WWII. do you think Afgan want to be "helped" by the former Soviet Union? me thinky they probably rather throw rocks at them (Hence the APCs)

<< I think they're helping out. >>

LoL helping themselves out!

Most of the armory the NA has comes from the Russians so its not exactly the german/israel story.

I think its a good thing that the Russians are there.

czar:

yeah. russia is our new best friend. there's a love fest developing between us. i don't think we ever
cared so much for each other 😀

exman seems to be confusing the soviet giant that died a decade or so go with the newly minted
democratic russia. the few ex-communist cronies that were left following the ussr implosion migrated
to their native bases in the central asian republics, where many of them managed to lives a few more
years as old time communist bosses. some of them, like islam karyov of uzbekistan, continue to linger,
having recreated the same personality cults and love for autocratic rule that made the soviet yahoos
of yesteryear so loveable.

the afghan warlords of today have short memories vis-a-vis (soviet) russia because they won the
war, contributed mightily to destruction of the largest government of atheists ever and, besides,
they've been recieving tons of military and humanitarian aid from russia for years now. the united
front and russie shared the taliban as an enemy long before america showed up.

actually Russia did seek the permission of the US, or at least made sure we wouldn't attack them. They're just trying to set up some relief help.

Besides, they have OIL, which as much as I think we should find different energy sources, the US needs oil to stay fat and happy.

If you'll remember, the Russians did something very similar in Kosovo, which really pissed everyone off, after they gave assurances they would coordinate or at least inform NATO of their intentions. The alliance goes in, and the Russians were already there!

Orcish,

I didn't say they were our enemy, but generally in a war type situation 300 people don't walk up from behind without telling someone. Thats a good way to get attacked.

I think I heard on the news that they were there to set up a new embassy, and that the NA didnt object to their presence.

"The US never fought Russia."

Technically this isn't true as during WWI (read specifically, during the russian revolution) Russia was attacked by US marines on Russian soil, attempting to support the "white" government, or the loyalists to bring russia back into WWI. This was soon abandoned however when the loyalists were defeated and most of its leaders banished from Russia. Thats why most of us haven't even heard of the incident.

I am glad some people around here know there history. For those who want to know US and British troops were stationed in Murmansk and Archangel (both on the White Sea, up near Finland). Don't feel sorry if you didn't know this, President Reagan didn't either. In a meeting with a Soviet leader (I believe it was Gorbarchov, but I could be wrong here) Reagan said "at least our boys have never fought against each other". The Soviet leader of course knew of the US forces in Murmansk and Archangel and was surprised Reagan did not.

We have fought against Russians, in Korea. Some Russian pilots flew the Mig-15 against our F-86's. Russia won't admit it but the north Korean pilot that defected and gave us the Mig-15 testified that there were Russian pilots in the cockpit of some of the Mig-15s.
