WTF is it about World of Warcraft

You cant win it
You cant truely die in it or stand to lose anything
You dont fight as in FPS, just sit there and watch him do his thing and maybe cast a spell
Everyone is doing the same quests as you it seems like, so you are not special or unique
You cant join the legion and openly attack the horde as part of the war with an organzed huge army
Every freaking quest is the same. Kill this guy, talk to this guy. Over and over.

but.........

the game is all i can think about. When im at school, all i can think about is getting more money in the game. All i can think about is leveling my warrior up to its next level.

WTF is it about this game? It has taken my life.............

You can be something other than what you really are on the game.
When I play a game, and beat it, it really upsets me. Although I know I can go back and play it again, I already beat it. I know where everything is, and it's just me there, against everything. Same weapons, same levels.
With MMORPGs, it's constantly changing.
You have people that you like, and those that you don't. And there is no storyline to push you in one direction. You can go any path you want. Become a tailor, or a warrior. It doesn't matter.
You can group with friends to take down tough enemies, or go head to head with other people in PvP.
You can build guilds with your friends, or ride you mounts into battle, or sit at the lake fishing all damn day.
It's basically a game you can immerse yourself in with your friends and enemies.

Well technically, it's because Blizzard has designed the game to induce the optimal release of endorphins to reward your minor virtual achivements in the game.

Pleasurable activities cause the release of endorphins, and this endorphin-rush can conceivably become 'addictive'. Evolutionary biologists have suggested this process of attentuating pleasure pathways is part of the brain's natural system for ensuring that humans develop abiding interests. Since human societies depend on enduring attachments, many theorists suggest such addictions are not necessarily a problem. Other views, such as the those summarized in Buddhist concept of tanha, suggest trivial attachments are at the root of much human suffering.

The pathways oriented to endorphins, sometimes called pleasure centers originated in small organisms such as insects, which rely on the neurological system to help them find familiar sources of food.

Endorphins stimulate activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine after initially activating opioid receptors earlier in the nervous circuit. Increased dopamine activity is often met by an decrease in the number of receptors sensitive to dopamine. This process is called downregulation. The decreased number of receptors tends to result in reduced electrical activity along post-synaptic nerve pathways, unless some behavior or substance causes a continued high level of dopaminergic stimulation. The absence of a pleasurable sensation in conditions that were formally sufficient can cause a mild feeling of let-down after receptors have been downregulated. The increased requirement for dopamine to maintain the same electrical activity is the basis of both physiological tolerance and withdrawal associated with addiction.

Which can pretty much describe the motivation to perform any activity depending on the individual:

Sex, Eating, Watching TV, Neffing on Anandtech... or playing WoW.

It's the same thing that drives people to play diablo 2 on all difficulty settings 4000 times until they have the best equipment. Our society is focused on individual achievements and obtaining power. We can't help it if that's what pulls us into video games.

True, but I think that Blizzard has really nailed the right formula with WoW as opposed to most other games. They've definitely raised the ratio of fun relative to frustrating, time-sink type activities and kept the negatives to a minimum, when compared to many other MMOGs.

For most people, the worst thing about the game right now is that you can't play more because of server downtime, queues and lag. When everyone hits 60 in the next month or two, we'll start to see about the long-term appeal of the game. I hope they release more details about the Hero classes soon.

Agreed.

Blizzard definitely has a hit on their hands with WoW.

From my experience in beta, most of the "fun" in the game actually started when I hit lvl60.

I think the game will be ultimately be judged by the endgame/Hero classes and how well they handle the server issues caused by the huge demand for the game.

It has taken my life too.

I am getting a little tired of the same old harvest/farm quests though. Kill x of y guy and bring z back to the guy who gave you the quest... I'm starting to skip some of them if they reward isn't something I really need. I'm currently a level 19 Tauren Shaman.

yes same as every other MMO..

You cant join the legion and openly attack the horde as part of the war with an organzed huge army
We do this every day.. its called PVP server and its open warfare agaisnt the Horde

Yeah, after I posted, I realized I should've added that it obviously must have some long-term appeal, since CB players have been playing for such a long time and have continued into retail in large numbers.

This game has absolutely devoured me. I play it every waking chance I get, and I'm thinking about it when I can't.

Of course, this is my first MMORPG, so it's probably especially appealing to me. Aside from that, it's a DAMN fine game.

I will probably buy wow and do the same thing I do with every mmorpg, play until it takes more than a week to level, then quit 🙂

Because it's Blizzard. I don't remember a bad Blizzard game. Went back and fired up StarCraft just a couple days back.
Starcraft makes me angry......they still have a cliffhanger going from the last expansion pack........

schandenfroh, you have a problem dude. I can understand it's a good game, but you have something called an addiction dude. Feel bad for ya.

Unlike some here, I disliked both starcraft and warcraft 3. I approached WoW with much skepticism and it has lived up to the hype for sure, unlike those other two games.

As males, we are succeptible to the reflex-reward syndrome.

Imagine a button.
You press it and a single M&M comes out.
You press it again and two M&Ms come out.
You press it again and three M&Ms come out.
So long as the number of M&Ms continues to increase, you WILL keep pushing that button forsaking many other things to do so, REGARDLESS of whether or not you want or need or, indeed, even LIKE M&Ms.

It's a heinous behavior taken advantage of by any corporations willing to exploit it.

must.
play.
more.

This game has consumed me!

I played to almost 60 in CB, and there are tons and tons of new cool things to do once you get that high...

In fact, alot of people in my guild say teh game actually starts once you hit level 60

I have had more fun playing this than anything else in a long time, I wont even go buy HL2, cause I know I wont play it.

Where have you people been for the past 9 years? This already happened to most of us with UO or EQ. Like a speed freak, you'll consume and consume for 2-3 years and then, suddenly, one day the emptiness of it will hit you and you'll be filled with remorse and sorrow. It happens to 100% of MMO players, so make preparations.

So true, So true...
I think Blizzard got it right this time mainly because there are not so many penalties upon death etc...When you are a hardcore, death penalties are not too big a deal, just keep on playing all night and make it up. However, any of the recent MMo's I have not been able to play just because I am a casual gamer and the death penalties were too harsh. When you only get to play a few hours a week, it really sucks when all you are doing is trying to rid yourself of penalties, or gain back lost items...it killls the fun
