I just installed left 4 dead 8 hours ago and when i try to launch it i get a error saying its unavailable, I've been trying every few hours. I dont care if i can play online i want to play single player as ive never played it before and want to get a feel for it. I have the HL orange box installed with steam and they all work. I e-mailed tech support but if they dont get back to me in the next couple hours with a solution ill be pissed, there is no excuse as to why i cant play a game in single player that i have fully installed on my computer, i dont give a shit if there server is working or not it should not matter for single player. Im starting to understand why some people hate steam and most DRM in general.

I hate that also. I installed DOW II the other day and I was not able to play it for 30mins because of its unavailability. BS!

Can you switch to Offline Mode for single player? It might be having trouble syncing your settings; offline should bypass that.

i guess it is trying to update, but the update server is not available, so it won't run the l4d

Did you try deleting Clientregistry.blob from your main Steam install directory?
(P.S. Welcome to the wonderful world of Steam. Enjoy your stay.)

This what happens when you let one company decide whether or not you should be allowed to play your own single player games at any time. Fuck Steam.

:D Welcome to Mass Effect. I wasn't able to stop thinking about it or put it down until I beat it. I think I did some marathon sessions too and did it in 3 sittings.

It's one of those games that you initially think, ehh... whatever looks alright, until you play it and you're absolutely hooked by the story and characters.

I've been raving about it way too much on this forum lately, but Mass Effect is truly brilliant.

I never had STEAM before I got ETW and I have to admit I was very leery of STEAM. Heard all the horror stories since its inception and whatnot although most were from its earlier days supposedly. I have avoided some games just because it required a STEAM account. Anyway I bought ETW and havent had a problem yet with Steam (knocks on wood). So far I'm pretty pleased with it although I would still prefer not to have to have a program like Steam just to play a game I bought from a store. I'd rather just DL a patch/update myself from the Developer's/Publisher's website as opposed to auto updates but that's the direction PC games are going these days due to piracy. Its either adapt or be left behind.

P.S. The offline mode works well. I use it all the time on my portable SFF rig.
