I tend to follow the beverage market pretty closely, until recently I can't remember ever seeing a drink that was Dragon Fruit flavored. Now it seems like I'm seeing dozens of different ones. I Googled and found a definition and a page that said it "tastes sweet and delicious" and one that said it was "refreshing" Gee thanks, that doesn't help me for shit to know what the hell it tastes like. I know I could just pick up one of the drinks and try it, but I'm not adventurous like that.

Why is this flavor everywhere all of a sudden? If it's so damn good why haven't I seen it in drinks until semi-recently?

It's made from the scales of dragons, and dragons are very rare. It takes a long time to process so what is out now has been hundreds of years in the making.

Well how the fuck do you expect to know what it tastes like without tasting it? You already read descriptions of the taste and you dismissed them, so obviously a thirdhand account is no good to you... Do you want to be able to Google it, lick the screen, and taste the flavor?

It's an acquiring taste, I love it. Mexico grows them as well as many Asian countries. I have to drive 150 miles to Salt Lake City to buy them at a Mexican supermarket.

I've had it fresh before.. it's not all that cracked up to be. Most of the time it tastes pretty bland.. if you're lucky, you may get one that is actually sweet. Even then, it's not sweet enough. The texture of it reminds me of eating a soft and ripe kiwi.

It doesn't really taste like anything and the seeds are rather soft so they do not affect the texture too much. I do not know how to describe it but it is a common fruit in Hong Kong from what I can see.

i had it before, you can eat it when it is crispy, the texture is not unlike that of wax apple (Syzygium samarangense), it is not as sweet. the flesh is white, with black seeds inside (like kiwi). you can also eat it when it is ripe, resulting in soft flesh like kiwi.

this fruit is aka pitaya

overpriced in my opinion because it is rarely seen outside southeast asia. i'd take wax apples any day.

Imagine a tasteless kiwi would be the best description for a dragon fruit. It doesn't have much taste.

Never understood the fascination with them. Pretty weak tropical fruit if you ask me.

well, it's the only fruit good enough for Blackwolf the Dragonmaster, to go with his filet o fish.

I see that fruit at my local A&P every once in a while.

I had one a few days ago. It's refreshing and good chilled. I have to admit, the flavor while decent is not very intense or sweet. The extravagant colors and strangeness belie a very muted flavor. Not worth the $8/each I paid outside of an interesting conversation garnish.

Wow, $8 a piece? I think I can get them for about $1-2 a piece down at the Italian Market. :p

What kind? My girlfriend picked up the big white flesh kind in Chinatown in NYC. It was big, like about the size of a decent grapefruit. $8 is insane though for 1 single serving piece of fruit. For $2 I'd buy them more frequently as it was pretty fun to eat. I like sort of like it's semi sweet character. It reminds me a lot of the prickly pear cactus fruit but much easier to eat.

This is the kind I had, white flesh inside.

Companies probably just put those flavors in their products so us Americans will think we're getting something exotic. In the end, it's the companies that get the last laugh because they just sold us a tasteless kiwi for an insane amount of money.

That said, I've never tried the fruit, but I'm one of the sorry suckers that would probably pay the insane amount of money to try some exotic fruit beverage.

wax apple is good, especially if you have them chilled and sprinkle a little salt on it.

My gf's parents grow them in their backyard....while they aren't the most flavorful, if you eat them chilled they are very refreshing....yum
