first link,

In a comparison/contrast essay, we can arrange our details by two different methods: chunk and slice. In the chunk method, we write what we have to say about one of the two entities we are comparing (a paragraph or two) and then what we have to say about the other entity. If the entities are labeled A and B, our body paragraphs might look like this: AABB. (If Philip had organized by this method, he would made all his points about one restaurant and then all his points about the other.) In the slice method, on the other hand, we shuttle back and forth between the two entities, either within the same paragraph or paragraph by paragraph. Our body paragraphs, then, might like something like this: ABABAB. (The authors of both sample essays use the slice method.)

woot, thanks! :)

Thanks for all your replies guys! all around!

This Teacher reminds me of an Assembly Language Professor I had back in College. The class had the highest failure rate of any other in the Computing Technology Program(Programming/Analysis). Assembly is a major PITA by itself, but this Professor had a unique teaching style, to say the least: Each class he'd ramble on for 10 minutes discussing some new thing, tells us what chapter to read in our Textbook, then Assign us some Project. All seemingly normal, except that he would *not* take questions! Often he'd disappear before the end of class, not that it made any difference.

On a related note: The guy was a total kook, while taking his class there was a local controversy about him with City Hall and his neighbours. It seems he had a fascination with Toilet bowls, having them strewn about his yard and even on the roof of his house. :D Eccentric perhaps, but a lousy Professor all the same.

Oh, calm down everybody. The teachers are highly stressed out and grossly underpaid. The kids can take a little yelling at once in a while, they'll probably forget about it within the week. And if you or you kid are so sensative that you have to take small matters like this up with the teacher or the principle then you have WAY too much time on your hands and are WAY too sensative about matters like this. Cut your teachers some slack and let them do their jobs without having to worry about oversensative cry baby parents. Just chill out you little whiners.

According to Urban Dictionary (they only have Chunk-style, not form) :)

Chunk-style

A Morbidly obese man who takes very good care of his appearance, except for his weight. Origin unknown.

"Hey, Chunk-style! Whass-happaneen!?"

How is assigning a paper and refusing to disclose the format you want the paper written in considered doing a good job of teaching?

Yeah, that's great. Nothing like making kids feel embarassed about asking questions, they should just tough it out and fail the class.

The teacher was a bitch. The girl obviously came from a different school system with a different curriculum. To say she should go back 3 grades because she didn't recognize a term is idiotic. And regardless of whether she should have known what it was or not, she shouldn't have belittled her. Sounds like a pretty bad teacher to me. I wouldn't take it to the principal or school board, but I'd make sure the teacher knew not to treat my child like that.

Sorry but that's not an excuse, especially since virtually no one has ever heard of "chunk form".

It would be different if the kid couldn't read or something.

I'm not saying that what this teacher did was right but to get all upset and threaten to talk to the principal over this matter is a little extreme. If this is an isolated incident then don't worry so much, you can't protect your kids from everything.

Besides nobody here really knows how the whole conversation/scenario happened. But if you like to waste your time and the teacher's time then I guess you can go ahead and get uptight about every little thing.

If I was 14 years old and a teacher told me I should have gone back to 6th grade (keeping in mind that I had a lot of respect for teachers back then, and still do, somewhat), I would certainly have been depressed and ashamed, even though I hadn't done anything wrong.

Letting little evils go by is asking for big ones to come along later. Something to that effect, anyway.

That teacher needs to be called out.

Seriously. Tell your relatives that the way your neice's teacher spoke to her is unacceptable. Teachers are there to TEACH, not belittle. The complaint should go on his/her record.

Print this thread out.

Tell them that a group of very intelligent, in some cases highly educated, computer nerds has know fvcking clue what "Chunk Form". This will only score points if you remind him that starting salary in our industry is more than he will be making after ten years.

I never heard of "chunk form" in my life.

Every school has a teacher like that. Tenure can really bite the administration in the ass sometimes.

If I was the kid I would have said.. "Chunk Form? Ok b*atch I'll give you a Chunk Form" and I would have punched the teacher in the face!

Who am I kidding. I probably would have cried to my mommy. :(
