WTF is a berm

I saw this sign on the road today, and I must say that I have never seen anything like it. I'm still confused by what a berm is and why pedestrians would be on it. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Edit: How did this wind up here? It was supposed to be in OT...

Crossed the berm between PCG and OT.

It's remarkably easy to search for the definition of "berm" so I'm not going to answer you. I only recently heard the term for the first time myself.

I make asphalt berms all the time but they are not something pedestrians would walk on.

Am I the only person that is frightened by the fact that people who are driving don't know what a berm is?

No, you aren't.

Seriously. I think I knew what a berm was before I got to kindergarden.

I honestly didn't know before I Binged it. News to me 🙂

Hmm, I see some online dictionaries claiming that this terminology is local to Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, so maybe it's not as widespread as I thought! I'm from Ohio and live in PA.

EDIT: But I seem xeemzor is in Ohio, so he's still guilty unless he's from elsewhere. 🙂

You should be, since it has nothing to do with driving, and I only ever saw the term after 12 years of driving when someone posted it on a forum.

we got one between my property and the granary behind my house. its like 8ft high. my kids love climbing it and in the winter they sled down it heh. but i never heard of it until they came to us and asked if they could build it.

to bad it screwed up teh dranage from my property and caused my basement to flood. but they put in dranage..but i still had a flooded basement =(

Pictures help more then the definition.
OH and most people I've heard use the word use it wrong, if they actually use it at all, but that should come as little surpise.

I started to Bing it, but inevitable ended up with porn videos.

The probability of looking at porn on the internet exponentially approaches 1 the longer a person is online and in a private place.

Some kinda wall? Maybe the pedestrians will have to walk along it due to lack of pavement etc.

technically it is the shoulder of the road, but it is usually raised in elevation.
