Rent a fricking auger next time. Home Depot has one that will do up to 18" holes 48" deep for ~$100 a day. It isn't a dinky 2 man one either, it is a 15' long tow behind hydralic auger. I have only used it for digging 8"x 42" fence post holes though, but those only took about 3 minutes a hole to get to 42" depth. And the dirt around here isn't so much dirt as it is clay with gigantic rocks in it.
