WTF!? I forgot how to read music!

Well, I've played musical instruments pretty much all of my life. I played clarinet in the school band for 4 years, and played a little piano when I was in middle school.

Three years later, I have completely forgotten how to read music. I don't must mean notes on the staff, as that was expected, and will be easy to re-learn. I can't even keep a steady beat by tapping my toe, and after a week of practice can almost clap out a simple (quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter/eighth rests) accurately.

Dotted notes are killing me. How can I get back to the form I was in? Do I just need to keep tapping my toe? You do not believe how stupid I feel for not being able to do something I've seemingly always been able to do.

Not being able to keep a beat and not being able to read music are 2 very different things. Have you guys seen The Jerk with Steve Martin? I really don't know what do say except for stop being so white;) and get a metronome to help you beat the beat back in.

lol, I've never really heard of this happening. I haven't played the clarinet in 2 years, and I was able to help out with a local HS's marching band's band camp (yeah yeah, have at it) with no problems.

Granted, I really really love music, so I probably have more reason to remember.

Just take your time, break things down, remember methodologies that helped you before.

wow, I didn't know it was possible to lose your beat... I mean, forgetting the notes on the staff I can understand, but not the losing natural rhythm part...

of course, you were a clarinet player. you had no rhythm, nor music. ;)
