Maine is seriously beautiful. :)

Acadia National park in particular rates with any of America's National parks in terms of natural beauty.

But that beautiful blue water IS the North Atlantic (brrr) so if you plan on any water sports better bring a wet-suit!

I took this pic a few years back after dragging myself out of bed at 2 AM to hike up from the campground and catch the 4:15ish sunrise. Really fun hike with headlamps and ridiculously beautiful destination.

I currently live a town or two north of Boston and this is the furthest south I'd live. A cabin or second house in Vermont, NH or Maine is in my future once I can swing it .. hopefully live there at least half time including winters.

As I've mentioned before I'm in New Haven CT and am giving serious consideration to moving (significantly) North myself!

EDIT: Also I've been in that exact spot! :D

So you know there’s a parking lot right behind where the pic was taken 😂 imagine my surprise to find it crowded there already after emerging from the dark trail

Second time I did that midnight hike we parked a car at the top the night before ..

It CAN get unpleasantly crowded at the easy to access spots like this one.... my favorite area's @ Acadia are the "ladder-trails"!

Same thing in most National parks unfortunately.... have to get off the beaten track to avoid the lazy tourists.

Those are 3 of my top 5 places to move. The other two are WA and AK. I think I'd want to stay on the east coast, but who knows. I know someone in AK, and he always posts amazing pictures of nothing in particular. It's just his neighborhood, and local places he goes to, and works at.

You mean Beehive etc? Yeah, those are really fun .. even for someone terrified of heights like myself!

Yeah Alaska has always intrigued me as well. I went once in college for some research at the HAARP radio facility .. easily the most remote place I've been with awesome landscapes everywhere. Family and friends keep me semi-local but it'd be top of my list otherwise.

It's all about Baxter man. Just don't go early spring or the black flies will feast upon your flesh.

I climbed Katahdin many years ago when I went to Maine Wilderness/Waterways summer camp. (did a 1500 +/- mile bicycle tour in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia)

You poor thing! :worried:

Being a super-taster can suck in some ways though.... I freaking notice everything and it makes me a picky eater in terms of quality. (which really bothers some people)

Yeah, my wife is a super-taster too...I have to season our dishes ENTIRELY differently. I use loads & loads of spices, sauces, etc. for my own dishes just to bring some flavor haha.

It is weird in some ways tho, to be a non-taster. Like, I can't tell the difference between farm-fresh eggs & store-bought eggs. Or between duck eggs & chicken eggs. They all just taste like eggs to me lol. Lobster has zero flavor. I've been to Maine & eaten tons of lobster at those little seaside shanties with fresh-caught lobster...just tastes like the butter they're in lol. I think it's a bit like audiophiles, some people are just more sensitive to the nuances than others...like, I'm perfectly happy with MP3's. I bought a fancy Headamp headphone amplifier & Sennheiser HD-650 setup back in the day...meh. I've had my Senn 290's for like a decade+ now, perfectly happy with them haha.

Oof. Sorry to hear that. Maine lobster meat is actually sweet, like crab legs, another favorite of mine.

Living here in New England, I've tried a ton of it over the past couple of decades. I've gotten cooking it in the Instapot down to a science, but the flavor is unfortunately just kind of lost on me. Same with filet mignon...I'd much rather have a NY strip steak done sous-vide with a cast-iron sear for $8 haha. On the flip side, I've gotten pretty deep into spices:

I use my mortar & pestle to open up flavors, plus my APO's dehydrator function to use up leftover produce that is going to go bad, to make stuff like onion powder:

For the past year or so, I've been really focused on sauces. For me, sauce is what makes the meal, more than anything else. Like, a lot of people bash boneless skinless chicken breast, but it's like a blank canvas with the right sauce! This is one I call "money sauce" (cuz it's green haha):

Currently 67-degrees for Maine's ocean water temp. Thats quite balmy compared to us in California with our frigid Pacific water.
59 in Half Moon Bay
61 in Santa Cruz Bay
60 in Pismo
67 in Huntington Beach
70 in San Diego

Well, currently it's August. Hottest part of the year.

I believe Maine waters average in the 40s though. The two areas are more similar than different I think. Both have lots of cold, well oxygenated waters, teeming with fish, rich in seaweeds and kelps, crustaceans, seals, the occasional gray suit...

Was planning on breaking out my Breeo tomorrow for some yard bird and pork chops. I think I'm going to try that Peruvian marinade w/green sauce for some of the chicken. Thanks!

Maybe it will blow your mind to learn that Alaska has more coastline than all of the East and West coasts of the US, combined?

You can also fit two Texases inside Alaska, with a little room left over.

Not quite that cold but still cold! :)

Take a look at the site I listed earlier in the thread.... it actually lists historic water-temp records plus current temps based on daily measurements all up and down the coast.
