All the RAM makers are being hit with big fines for conspiring to drive RAM prices up a few years ago. Class-action lawsuits, baby!

"Big Oil" decided to get into the memory business so now they are driving up RAM prices to boost their obscenely criminal profits.

supply and demand. Supply of DDR is going down because companies are switching over to DDR2 so those prices are higher. However DDR2 prices are also higher because even though more of it is being made now the demand went up quite a bit because of AM2 and C2D both using it and people upgrading to it.

Is this for real? I am so effin disappointed right now. I didn't expect to pay so much for RAM for my new system. (I wanted to spend more elsewhere, like the GPU.)

Crap, it seems that everytime I want to purchase a new system from scratch, I pick the times when prices are sky high...

FS/FT, here I come.

Plus in the couple weeks following C2D release, demand for DDR2-800 shot up, so prices shot up to match. Time to hit them for gouging again. :(

I bought my 2GB for $180 before MIR of $50. So even if I don't get my MIR, I still got a good deal based on the current RAM pricing.

Correct.

So what the manufacturers are doing (not the assemblers, like Corsair, Kingston, PDP, etc...) is limiting supply to the assemblers, causing shortages. I can't get more than 50pcs (per SKU) of DDR2 at a pop from Corsair - I used to be able to order all I wanted. They have daily allocations,a nd onece they get to that, they won't sell anymore to us.

Then - market gets tight, prices go up, and the manufacturers now have the extra $$$ to pay the fines! How fsckin nice! :|
