I haven't really watched televised news (besides the BBC) since 2002, but I remember CNN being a reputable news source. However, I've caught them on the news a few times recently (local burger king has 1 tv playing CNN and 1 playing Fox News all the time), and they've become just as disgusting as Fox!
They're so sensationalist now! They have bright flashy 3d logos, dramatic news, and ridiculous talk show hosts have replaced actual news. They ask completely loaded questions, and prevent a stance that is obscenely left and skewed as Fox is to the right. They don't really seem to be news anymore, just slanted opinion piece after opinion piece hidden under the mask of a talk show.

I hate sensationalist news, they've become nothing more than entertainment channels that try to drum up as much as excitement as possible, truth or accuracy be damned. Are all the news channels this bad, is this what America has come to?

I am less miffed at Fox and the CNN types than I am at the people who actually watch them. The only time I watch either is every other November for one night :) I have never understood why people would use a cable news channel as their news source. I prefer the internet. But I agree, when watching the results the other night, I was surprised to see how anti Bush they were.

I don't disagree that CNN leans left and all TV news has become sensationalist, but:

If Bush were a Democrat most networks would probably seem like they were leaning right. The fact is it's a lot easier to criticize people who have the power than those who don't. What would be the point of analyzing Democrats who didn't have the power to change anything?

The only network that is continually willing to support Bush is Fox News. Even conservatives on other networks (like Joe Scarborough) know there is very little to defend about this administration, but Fox News' anchors (Neil Cavuto and John Gibson for example) and most of the people they interview are still insisting that the country has surrendered to terrorists by voting Democrat.

While CNN may favor Dems, the degree of this pales in comparison to such places as P&N. The people at CNN are just too old to live up to the expectations of the younger and more liberal generations.

It's not that they're biased that bothers me, it's that they seem unprofessional and more concerned with ratings than reporting news. They're not as bad as Fox, the original kings of spin, but they're still pretty bad and I think unacceptable for any news organization, even if they were an openly biased one, trying to be accepted as a credible news agency. Looking like the news network straight out of robocop really lowers a network's credibility imo. Flash and glam have no place in the news, especially when they start to replace actual content.

First, MSNBC is the best news source on tv.

Second, CNN has glenn beck. He's a less bumbling rush limbaugh.

Third, the degree of idealogy isn't as important as the degree of respectability. MSNBC has lots of conservatives but they are not partisan and they know their stuff. Glenn beck types, Oreilly's, these people are know nothings way in over their heads. Tucker, Scarborough, Pat Buchanan, these are all different types of conservatives but not as partisan as their cnn and fox counterparts. And they know their stuff.

Idealogical tilts are fine as long as you are getting something. Fox and CNN are devoid of any merit.

I agree CNN has gone very sensational - especially with people like Anderson Cooper. I don't mind them durring the day that much, but their night shows really really SUCK. I like a few of the shows on MSNBC at night, like Hardball. But CNN's primetime lineup is horrible.

CNN and Fox News are both cable networks right? Perhaps they just have to dig a bit deeper than other networks in order to get people to watch their shows since they do have a smaller viewer base.

Somebody explain to me then, why the best news channel is Comedy Central?

- JaAG

It isn't, really. Comedy Central does some things better than news channels, and news channels do some things better than them.

Where the news channels are forced to bend over backwards not to say 'Bush made an idiot of himself today', Comedy Central gets to say that, filling the need.
