S my gf goes out and buys one of those 10 steps to a successful marriage books, (we're not even married)
and starts to analyze our relationship and me according to the book.
I was like "I'm not perfect and I'm not that book"
Can't compete with some stupid book so I tell her maybe you should go find
the man that fits that book and we break up.

Man..some people..WTF are they thinking..living in some ideal world like its some book.

oh god...first thing i did was laugh, sorry bud...but what can ya do...that's freakin hilarious...good move on the breaking up part....

LMAO sorry bout laughin man, but your post title was hilarious. I just broke up with the GF too and it isnt that much fun :frown:

If your not engaged, here's one sentence to use:
"If you're not happy with me, you are free to leave."

Also:
"I'm a terrible, terrible person."

I've said this to my fiance before, in different ways though. like:
"Sorry, i'm not good enough for you." (this one is OK, she gets mad, but shuts her up. It's fairly safe)
"Why did you say yes?" (This is for emergencies only)

Don't start taking crap like this now, because if you do, it will be there forever! Nip it in the bud!

😀 I think both a congratulations and sympathy are in order. One can only imagine what you'd be going through if you'd caved in and the book she'd bought was one of those John Gray "Mars & Venus" books. Say goodbye to any testosterone you thought you had...

If she continues to be infulenced by that book, move on fast. Don't get stuck with a soon-to-become-bitch.

Sorry to hear it happen to good people. Good answer too.

Wow! I can hear the whip cracking all the way from the East Coast. Next thing you know she will be breaking out the Cosmo quiz's as well.

Run Forest Run......

Either that or get into rap music, she will probably broker a deal..Ghetto Bastard Tantos will go away if Dear Abby Tanto's girlfriend will disappear. Bottomline is to not let her start this when there is not even a ring on her finger...

Yeah so she comes over early today to give me back some of my stuff and still blames me for the breakup.
Says the book didn't break us up..it just told her that we weren't meant for each other.

I'm sure she'll have a good ole time trying to get other guys to conform to that book.

Reading comprehension...

If a relationship is not working out...shouldn't you try to work on it? just a bit?

A book is a bit too much thou....

Some people are never satisfied with what they have or whom they are involved.

I have had a couple experiences similar to yours. Basically it came down to the fact I was not the person she wanted.
In retrospect I wish I had broken up with them sooner than I had and saved myself a lot of trouble.
Now I only spend time with people who like me and who I like.

BTW how old is she? She sounds really immature.

Not only that, she would always nitpick about stuff or start little fights over nothing and then tell me I always avoided things.
The she would say I always took these arguments as small things, which she regarded as a measure of my indifference to her.
That was her favorite thing, to see if I cared enough to talk to her about little crap or remember what the hell she said 3 weeks ago.
Like I can remember every little detail. And the book..man..she kept asking me questions like "what is my favorite novel" and if I didn't know,
she would say that's one reason we don't belong together because the book says so.

The book I believe was 10 Steps to a Successful Marriage or something along those lines.

The only book I've heard of in that genre that may be worth the paper it's printed on is The Seven Principles for Making Marriage work by John Gottman which is actually based on years of clinical research rather than regurgitating the politically correct cheeze that makes up most relationship books. The book title is misleading because it isn't the pulp it sounds like and is entirely appropriate to read even if unmarried. Basically it concludes that most couples that stay together are imperfect people who fight regularly, but who manage to honor and respect each other even when they're fighting.

Even if your GF was reading Gottman's book, people have a tendency to hear what they want to hear (or in this case, read what they want to read). I'm sure whatever book she was reading had some things she could have worked on to become less of a nag, but somehow those parts get skimmed over in favor of the parts saying what an imperfect jerk her boyfriend must be because he's not following steps 3 and 6.

Good call on the breakup. She'll have to learn to stop preaching out of the 'good book' of the month to her significant other, or she'll watch the time on her biological clock run out while she waits for the mythical man who enjoys being put down and disrespected.
