Practicality (when you need it) is there. People buy sports cars but they don't need it every day either, especially on highways with speed limits.

Sure the gas increase hurts, but is it enough for me to regret buying an SUV (in '95) ? Hell no. It's gotten me through Buffalo and a hell of a lot of trips to Home Depot.

very, very, very few suv owners buy one for uses such as yours, and uses such as they are built for.

Well yesterday the cheapest gas here was $1.71, this morning it was $1.74 at the same place... so a 3 cent jump overnight.

You know what sucks the most about having an SUV ? When a relative or friend asks you to help them move something or drive them to get something. Yeah... you're welcome. Can I borrow your snowblower next time ? It'd be pretty convenient when I need it.

Like I said... the availability is there so why not plan ahead and buy one when it comes time to decide. Very very very few people need to do 1/4 mile in under 15 seconds but they still buy sports cars.

I feel lucky. While prices have gone up around here (Alexandria, VA), they're still pretty low compared to the average. At one station I can usually get 87 for $1.74 - $1.77 which is nice.

I really don't care what the rest of the world is paying. I don't live there.

They said the same thing back in the 70s.

you werent alive in the 70's
I was alive in the 70s, and what they actually said was that the price of gas would level off at around $10/gal by 1985, that the internal combustion engine was obsolete, and that the world would run completely out of oil by the mid 90s. It was a con then, it's a con now.

In Japan it's about 110 yen a liter at the cheapest, which translates to nearly $4.

Those are some inconsiderate friends. Friends that help me move get free beer during the move, dinner afterwards, and gas money.

Don't forget all the racers too... I don't know how that behavior is accepted and SUV driving isn't. Of course one is more frequent than the other, but the idea doesn't even bother anyone. Double standard if you ask me.

You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a lifted truck or SUV. Sports cars are much more rare and most production sports cars get better mileage than trucks/SUVs. I don't think it is a double standard. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Stop comparing our gas prices with other countries in Europe or Asia. In most US cities, car is a necessity. While in Europe, they have an alternative transportation that they can rely on, so the price of gasoline does not impact them as much as it impacts us here. Of course, we feel the pain much more with the rising of the gas price.

My sister who lives in Taipei, use the Mass rapid train everyday to work and she does not even have to own a car. When she needs one, she just call a cab. My friend who lives in Germany also bike and use the train. Now, if we have that alternative here it might be different, because try not having a car and live in Phoenix, AZ just by relying on the public transportation. Public transportation here just plain sucks.

Damn, it jumped again. Drove by and it's $1.87 now. One of the stations is $1.95.
