wtf, gas just increased by a huge margin overnight

I did, however, see premium selling @ $2.01 / gallon a few days ago. Regular unleaded is still selling between $1.60 and $1.75.

Regardless, the fuel crisis of the 70s did create a need for small, fuel efficient cars.

But I didn't mean that the SUV market was going to dissolve. If hybrid technology becomes widespread, we may see plenty of SUVs that get gas milage like todays family sedans.

Yes, I was getting really worried about the I30 getting poor gas mileage, but it is actually getting 24 - 27 MPG actual, compared to my Civic which got 26-31 MPG actual. I also have to pay from premium gas, but I also get to drive further before stopping for gas, so it goes like this:

Civic would usually go 300 miles and it would drink 11 gallons of gas @ $1.80 = $20

I30 goes about 380 miles and drinks 15 gallons of gas @ $2.00 = $30

Soooo, over 15,000 miles (one year) I spend $200 more in gas. Big deal.

Eli has a point that if gas prices surge and hold steady at "high" rates (in fact even now they're pathetically low), then it should hopefully trigger another jump in R&D for alternative energies. People still like large powerful vehicles, but if they're paying $4000/year in gas they're going to support in general more money put into hybrid technology now, and hydrogen, fuel cells, etc. later.

Further, the less gas the general public relies on the more autonomous and in control the nation is, because it will feel less pain every time those idiots in OPEC raise prices (although if I was in their position I'd do the same, so that's not so idiotic).

Same here in Las Vegas.
Average was around $2.09
Arco was $2.05

Cheapest was $1.98 last night - this AM was $2.17

I expect the others to jump by the time I head home.

it might have been just a local thing but I cant remember.

 

I'm glad I took delivery of my 2004 Honda Accord 4-cylinder 5-speed manual 2.5 weeks ago. I'm in a bigger car that gets BETTER gas mileage than my old '96 Sentra. My last fillup was 28 MPG!

The disclosure of what is happening in Iraq is feared to cause political reprecussions from the oil pumping nations.

Also, the pyscological target range or $25-$30 barrell is considered dead.
Many feel that the world economy is recovering and can support a $35 barrell base price.

Some countries will try to push close to a $40 barrell as long as instability holds.
