so basically bullshit regulations which were probably put in place to protect American car companies like Ford?
Not really understanding how this is protecting Ford. I'm sure they would love to sell it in the States if they could.

Why would you think they aren't already taking into consideration EPA testing? I'm not saying they are or aren't, I'm just curious why you think EPA testing would lower it so much.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_automobiles#Europe

In the European Union, passenger vehicles are commonly tested using two drive cycles, and corresponding fuel economies are reported as 'urban' and 'extra-urban', in liters per 100 km and (in the UK) in miles per imperial gallon.

The urban economy is measured using the test cycle known as ECE-15, introduced by the EEC Directive 90/C81/01 in 1999. It simulates a 4,052 m (2.518 mile) urban trip at an average speed of 18.7 km/h (11.6 mph) and at a maximum speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). The extra-urban cycle or EUDC lasts 400 seconds (6 minutes 40 seconds) at an average speed 62.6 km/h (39 mph) and a top speed of 120 km/h (74.6 mph).[23] EU fuel consumption numbers tend to be considerably lower than corresponding US EPA test results for the same vehicle. For example, the 2011 Honda CR-Z with a five-speed manual transmission is rated 6.1/4.4 l/100 km in Europe and 7.6/6.4 l/100 km in the United States

that 67 mpg could be reasonable for the imp/us conversion, or eu/us testing difference, but not both together.

it would match or better the mpg for the much more expensive ford fusion hybrid
Right, because the Fusion Hybrid is a huge moneymaker, I'm sure. I'm not going to look up the numbers, but I'm sure they sell very few.

If anything, it would eat away at the Prius market.

lol, so it's because of our stupid EPA standards, not stupid American consumers. We are so damn concerned about the environment that we restrict ourselves from driving something that can help the environment.

Not just the EPA but NTSB/DOTs as well. Same goes for:

Toyota Hilux
Nissan Skyline
Porsche 959
Mercedes 190-e16
Russian 469s jeeps

Plenty of killer cars that don't make it into the US due to import restrictions.

sorry, i was wrong. the regular focus and fusion already match or beat the hybrid fusion.

What the fuck Ford? Why would you not release this in the USA? Everyone would want this car, diesel fuel is basically the same price as premium gas right now so the fuel/dollar economy is off the hook. What the fuck do we have to change regulation/legislation or societal-wise to get these kind of vehicles in the USA?

no this isn't a thread for Garage forum, it's not so much about the car as it is why the fuck we don't get this shit here in the States.

Reverse psychology advertising perhaps. Americans already have so many choices, and most are better choices than Ford. So, if Ford says,"so sorry dudes, no soup for you," Americans will be banging down their door and paying through the nose to buy a Ford. Ford is one of the most discounted brands with their crazy rebates and stuff. This approach would put an end to that I think. And while I'm wacky and creative sometimes, I am surely not the only one who has had this idea.

So there. There's my wacky idea.

Diesels suck. They sound terrible, they have no torque, they tend to be hard to start in cold weather, the fuel stinks to high heaven...do not want.

Thank the government and their desire to ensure we dont get diesel as a viable option. Laws, restrictions, public perception etc etc.

LOL

Good one! :D

All true too!

::Former Mercedes diesel owner::

Mine had a turbo on it, and you would get a torque burst at low RPM's, then it would struggle until the next gear change. I had to plug it in in the winter so it would start, and you always heard the engine running (it had a pretty big engine though). Ever get diesel on your hands? It never comes off! Though improved with newer models, they still have a choking stench to their exhaust.

Still do not want.

Ford has been VERY good to me.

Bought at less than $3 a share ... sold at $16 a share. You figure out how good Ford has been good to me. My only regret is that I didn't invest MUCH more in late 2008. I would have retired by now.

Oh well ...

That is just plain wrong, even for a 80s MB diesel. Diesels as a rule generate great amounts of torque.

It seems people have no idea how expensive it is to make a diesel vehicle here in America. All the stuff to make it emissions legal is very expensive. It's why you only see diesel on higher end brands like VW or Audi and you're going to pay thousands more for that diesel engine. It's going to be minimum $3,000 on top of the normal price. You'd have to be retarded to pay that on a Fiesta. The base Fiesta already gets good mileage.

They do until you get to around 2500RPM or so...all the power is in the low end, which is good for a truck but sucks for cars. When you accelerate, it's like "FAST slow slow slow slow <shift>FAST slow slow slow slow slow<shift>FAST slow slow slow slow..."

That is a gearing issue, not an engine issue.

In America there's no point in fighting settled belief with logic. Especially counter-intuitive logic.

Basically Americans have been born and brought up with the "black smoker" variety of diesel engines. And nothing ever changes in the minds of Americans (once a thought has settled in to common knowledge it never changes) no matter how good the technology gets over time.

So to try to bring in a perceived "dirty" technology and put it up against what we've been brainwashed into believing is the end-all be-all of 'green' tech (hybrids) would be financial/marketing suicide.

something is wrong that you think VW is a "higher end brand".
