I don't have Facebook but my wife does. Why would my searches, on my phone, show up as ads on her Facebook when she is on her phone?

If she starts getting ads for big boobed teens, I am sunk.

:)

Watch the 'The Social Dilemma' on Netflix, and you'll have a pretty good idea why targeted ads show up on here Facebook account.

If Facebook settings are left at default, and you don't use extensions to block Facebook following everything you do, you're going to have a bad day. :p

There is some kind of irony to that being on Netflix... who is basically the equivalency of what they are talking about - recording precisely what you watch in order to paint a picture of you....

I'm OK with that. I watch it on my smart TV, so they see nothing else that I do/search for on my PC.

However, Netflix is nowhere near what Facebook/Google/Amazon do. They follow you everywhere if you let them.

Facebook is an exchange. One in which humans can satisfy their need for connection(sometimes justified) but must disclose their details onto its servers and certain "masters" with access to such agents. ;)

Because the amount of other services watching what you're doing makes it possible. Start using adblocking software, and if you're tech savvy use a pihole server or two for redundancy

I run Ad Blocker in my PC browser but nothing on the phone. I believe the ads are coming from my phone.
I just searched motorcycles for sale on my phone. I'll see if they show up on hers.

Your phone is the biggest offender, smart phones really are. Even browsing google news, there's a ton of ads watching you.

Good news tho, your searches on porn hub are probably unnoticed as advertising materials to be shared with the Mrs :)

I use uBlock Origin to stop most of the add tracking. But, since my wife and I shop Amazon under the same account; I get ads using my phone for bras and what not.
I also have to allow some google content in order to log into YouTube. Maybe I'll look into Pi Hole, as @ch33zw1z mentioned.

I tried to set up Pi Hole on my raspberry pi multiple times and the instructions floating around and how to guides are all too confusing to understand. Eventually I got it set up but it was blocking essential services even after I whitelisted them. At that point I just gave up.

For android, they have no root system wide blockers, It uses the vpn functionality to blackhole advertising requests. I use DNS66. That won't work if you need the vpn as a vpn. AFAIK, you can only have one vpn instance at a time.

It's freaky the amount of spying they can really do on you. They pretty much know every site you've been to and what you've done on those sites. What your IRL conversations are, and probably even what you buy. This sort of spying needs to be illegal, but that's never going to happen given the government themselves are into that stuff.

We really have no privacy now days. Makes it worse that most people just don't care.

The motorcycles for sale search never popped up. So I tried cruises and withing two minutes she had Facebook ads for Cruises.
I can see if I had the ads. But the fact that she does tells me this goes very deep.

It really is freaky just how deep they go.

I was at work and got an alarm for a tower light that was out. I made a ticket for the company that goes and replaces bulbs in our towers. Don't recall how the conversation started but at some point I casually mentioned to my coworker how cool it would be to climb one of those towers.

Later on I'm on Facebook, I see an ad for that very company. They had a job opening.

People love to pay for their lack of privacy, in many cases, it's the same people that cried about goverment spying for decades. It's pretty far out there man, but the implications of social media have been around since the beginning, it's just a generational gap in umderstanding technology that exists. My parents love it, ain't gonna change them. Now if they would stop telling me to check their new Facebook posts that would be nice

It's not too crazy to set up. I played with it in a VM first before I bought a raspberry pi and added an old laptop as my redundant one.

Here's a longer thread over in networking sub that has more info.

Pihole has a pretty strong following and helpful user base

Feel free to ping me questions or visit their forums, even the reddit sub isnt bad

I ended up donating $25 to the cause
