wtf do pointless new flash card formats keep coming out?

MS, MS Duo, xD, new "mini SD" which is basically the same size as SD....

why not just SD for memory and CF for everything else?!?! that would be perfect

Memory stick exists because Sony wanted to get royalties from every memory card that is required to use [most of] their cameras. There's no real reason they couldn't have gone with CF or MMC.

Same with xD I believe.

Companies just get tired of paying royalties to whoever owns the format, so they develop their own.

I was thinking about the paper flash cards... you're right. They have 3x5, 5x8... who knows what else they'll think of!!! I say just keep one size and be done with it.

no, memory stick is a different (better and more expensive) technology.
i believe the transfer rates are faster, which enables the sony's to capture video limited only by the size of the card.
which is unlike others, which are limited by internal buffer mem.

Don't believe this is the case any more. CF has 9MB/Sec transfer rates currently.
