A friend of mine told me that the fsb is the only factor dictating the performance of a processor. i.e. a 3ghz cpu having a fsb of 800 mhz actually works only at 800 mhz! I no this sounds completely stupid but how do I convince him otherwise? Please gimme a suitable arguement for a n00b to get it.

Cache, pipelines, stages, trace caches, execution units, SIMD, OOO, branch prediction, HyperThreading, 64-bit addressing....they all account for nothing eh? Just hand your friend an 800MHz 486SX using a 1x multiplier. Same performance as a Pentium 4 with an 800MHz FSB, right?

Take him to the Dell site and show him that you can get a 3.06P4 on either 533 or 800. Fat lot of good it will do, but maybe the lightbuld will come on.

Then tell him that some folks at Anandtech said he should hang out as a GUEST for a little while to get up to speed. He should NOT create an account right away as he is not yet old enough to think.

He has misheard some information on overclocking and misinterpreted it. The fault is his, not yours. As far as an argument goes, it will not matter 10 years from now. So if you do like him, consider it a personality flaw and ignore it. Just do not build a system using his advice. 😉

it always seems that everyones "friend" thinks they know everything about computers...and 99/100 times they are intel fanboys.
