WTF did the dishwasher do to my pan?!!?

So I cooked some veggies with some olive oil, and then I ran it through the dishwasher, and it came out totally black.

The Silver one is how it's SUPPOSED to look, and the black one is how it came out. I've made this meal with these pans many times and run them through this exact same dishwasher with the exact same soap, and this has NEVER happened before.

Any ideas wtf happened?

P.S. Sorry for the huge pic, I don't know how to shrink it :(

I have no ideas but on second though did you check the dilithium crystal mixture ratio?

Looks tarnished, really. Can't tell from the pic itself, though.

Does the coloring wipe off at all?

I've always put trays in the dishwasher, it fits in perfectly...

It wasn't hot when I put it in, I waited for it to cool down. I can't scratch off the black with my nail or anything.

The uniformity of the coating is odd.

First possibility: The pan was originally coated with a thin, food grade plastic to keep it shiny before sale. This coating got baked in the dish washer. The only problem with this explanation is that the pan gets hotter in the oven than in the dish washer.

Second possibility: The pan was originally coated with a thin, food grade plastic to keep it shiny before sale. This coating got baked off in the oven. The newly exposed metal was then oxidized by the dishwasher detergent.

Third possibility: The blackness reflects your soul.

Fourth possibility: The dish detergent acted as a salt bridge between your pan and another metal object (silver?) in the dishwasher and the other object partially dissolved and plated onto your pan.

edit: The fourth explanation seems most likely given the even coating on the pan.

You baked on the oil. Kind of like what happens with cast iron, but slightly different in this case, all it did was change the color of the pan, nothing major. You won't be able to get that out though.

The thing is, I've made the exact same meal on this pan before, and every time I've washed it, it came out perfectly clean.

Your pan has been blackened.

Blackening is done to various metals to prevent corrosion. The process involves heating the metal to a high temperature, then "washing" it. You may have put the pan in the dishwasher while it was still hot, or had the pan at a very high temperature and inadvertently caused this process.

I worked in a factory many years ago where they did this process for TV parts.
