WTF! Car Insurance Prices are crazy...

Well, just got my 6 Month Progressive quote: $2,877.00

AGE: 20
Vehicle 1: 1993 BMW 325i

WTF is this! They require Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability which is $1300 alone for 6 months (the rest is Comprehensive and Collision coverage), and i selected all bare minimums. Had no accidents or tickets. 😕

Where do you live? It being a BMW doesn't help much either.

I pay $144 every six months on my '94 Camry, and I'm 24, and unmarried.

They cant be serious, we are talking about $500 a month here, thats what my appartment costs me. :| Full coverage would be $4670 for 6 months.

Shop around. I found progressive to be 50% higher than what I currently pay under Allstate.

What Vi said. I'm sure you can do better with a different carrier....it's not like you're driving a 2003 M3 or anything.

Yeah, after seeing their commercial I thought I'd check them out. Mine ended up being like double what I currently pay through Allstate. 🙂

They are quite serious.

My rates are similar. Comprehensive insurance at our age, on ANY vehicle (even a slow ass Civic) is expensive as hell.

Pretty much the only option is buy a vehicle you don't have to finance so you don't need comprehensive insurance.

Liability on my 1989 Accord DX Coupe was $150 a month, going to comprehensive would have doubled that.

A Z28 will cost me around $500 a month for comprehensive coverage.

OH THIS IS FVCKING GREAT! I was planning to pick up my new 2002 M3 sometime this winter. Guess that wont be happening. 🙁

Yeah, I've found Progressive (at least the info I got from their website) to be quite a bit higher than elsewhere.

And I pay a good bit for my insurance anyways. 24, male, unmarried, living on Long Island, driving a 97 Acura CL 3.0. Gah, I'm just waiting till I turn 25 to get a break on insurance.

One of the few perks of living in bum fvck Iowa - cheapest insurance rates in the nation.

Yeah... Unmarried and i live in a big city.

I wanted to get this 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo from a friend insted of my Bimmer sometime soon, but now having 2'nd thoughts. Its like a $12,000 car too, no big deal.

$5754/yr??? :Q Umm, no.

I'm 22, have one speeding ticket and still only pay $1360/yr through Liberty Mutual on my Integra. Which, as I understand, has the highest theft rate in the U.S. The policy I selected isn't anywhere near barebones:

100/300 coverage for property and bodily injury
$500 deductibles for BOTH comprehensive AND collision

You definately need to shop around.

Until you have to fix something on it. I was toying with getting a 928 S4 as a weekend "toy", but thought better of it after doing some "what would it cost to fix if part X broke" calculations. That's part of the reason insurance is high for cars like that; it costs that much more to fix them if they get cracked up.

What, you expected insurance on a BMW to be affordable? Go to their site and punch up something like a Saturn SL1, a Neon, or a Corolla, and see what happens to the quote. 😉

Kids and their cars. . . I've been there, but I'm back to driving junkers into the ground. Driving is more fun when I'm not worried about my expensive car, and money is free for other things, like stuff for my home, and even a down payment on my own house, with my own garage, for the day I do buy a dream car.

I got esurance. I don't know how good their service is, but their adress is about 2 miles from my home, so I know where to find them if they screw me. Prices are good. I have 1996 Maxima, unmarried, 22, in SF bay area, and I am paying < $100/month full coverage. The only good thing I have going for me is clean record and I am engineer.
I think Maxima is good cus it's sporty, but to them it's just about same as a camry.

Hey that's me! 24, male, unmarried, living on Long Island (nassau cty). I turn 25 in 2 months... and getting married within 2 years. WOO fuggin HOO!!!!!! ... Geico insurance for me on a '95 Rodeo (SUV) is $600 for 6 months, liability only.

Geico didn't want to hear about me when I quoted at 17 years old. I got Progressive really cheap at one point, then they found my stop-sign ticket... jacked up the price so much I had to switch. Called Geico again only last year and they were very competitive about the rate. Give them a try.

Nah, I'd still like to drive a nicer car than a junker... even now as I'm about to put a down payment on a house. The day you get to buy a dream car (after making all those mortgage payments and have kids) is the day you have gray hair... or win the lotto.

Enjoy it while you can feel good about it.

Yeah, I made a mention of the nearby residence in that "Where do you live?" thread a little while back. But I'm in Suffolk County.

I don't like Geico. They tend to drop you if you cost them any money.
I currently use Met Life since I get discounts thru work.

You are preaching to the choir on this rant my friend. Progressive wanted around a grand a month to insure me. Eh? NO. I have decided to stay with State Farm and on my parent's policy. I am only paying 164 a month right now for full insurance.
