wtf, canada charges 5 cents for plastic bags?

It's a social behaviour change initiative. 5 cent is charged so that it will sting, but not too much, hoping you will change to reusuable bags. Personally, I would have just put a bin in the store where people can bring in any unused bags and whoever wants them can take them. Walmart has a bin for the bags but I don't think you can take them out.

I have a dozen of the reusable bags.

I re-use the bags for garbage cans at home.

Otherwise i'd have to buy bags :frown:

Also, re: stores charging 5 cents per bag. "Hey look, everyone! We're green, we care about the environment! (And, we're increasing profits!)"

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

On the other hand, if you like the bags so much and find them useful then you shouldn't have a problem paying a meager 5c. It's not evil for a corporation or company to want to increase profits, although playing on the eco angle is perhaps ethically dubious.

Why should I pay for something that has always been provided free of charge? The cost of the bags hasn't gone up.

I don't appreciate being nickle-and-dimed out of my money. Especially under false pretenses.

Then bring your own goddamn bag

Why should I have the extra expense and hassle? So the company can save .1¢ per bag?

Fuck that.

Edit: I forgot, the company also gets to boast about how "green" they are.

this morning @ the variety store, i noticed a sign posted by the cashier that said "we are now charging 5 cents per plastic bag, it's the law".

i wasn't aware there was an actual law... 0_0

It definitely shouldn't be, at least in the US. How you guys go about legislating day-to-day life is your affair 😛
C'est la loi!

I imagine the cost was already built into the price of the products. DrPizza is correct, profit grab under a different name.

Just get a reusable bag. Problem solved.

Like somone else said in the thread, when they start charging the fee, they will lose a customer. When the gas stations started charging more for credit last year (claiming that they didn't already account for that in the price) I quit going to the stations that charged two different prices. Same will apply with the bag situation.

You cry more than the supposed "eco nazis" that you're so frustrated by. Ha ha. Wha whaaa.

no douchebag so you don't waste the fucking bag

Stop thinking about "ZOMG what a hassle, I'm bringing my own bag" and instead think "that's 1 less plastic bag I have to throw away"

You don't get it. There are real results. I for one am sick of seeing plastic bags stuck in trees. I am sick of seeing them at the side of the road. I'm sick of seeing them blowing around in the wind (NO IT'S NOT BEAUTIFUL).

The stores don't brag about how green they are. They just ask for your 5 cents. But not my 5 cents because I bring my own bags.

No, it's "Now I have to buy bags to use for cat litter, bathroom trash can, trash can under the sink, trash bags for cleaning out the car, trash bags for cleaning out the gutters, trash bags to suffocate hookers with, trash bags for emptying the vacuum cleaner..."

Pretty sure such similar laws/taxes/fees have been proposed in Colorado and other places in the US as well.

The irony being that some of the most bio-degradable stuff is being preserved within some of the least bio-degradable stuff for all time.

That's what Target bags are for 🙂 Target clearly has the best shopping bags. Thicker, no holes, perfect size.

I just don't want to have to pay extra for the bags 😉

From earlier in this thread.

The real douche here is the one who wants to force their eco-values on everyone.

So you admit that they're supremely useful, but you're pissed that you have to pay a whole 5c for them?

Think of the greater good 😉

Instead of paying extra for bags, wouldn't it serve the greater good just as much to provide incentives for recycling old bags?

Coupons, gift cards, ect.

But that would cost the company money instead of the consumer...

Your proposal
Buy stuff -> get bags -> recycle bags -> buy stuff -> get bags -> recycle bags
= 1 new bag everytime you go shopping + you having to bring the bag back to recycle + energy required to recycle bag = money + resources at every turn

Current
Buy Stuff -> buy reusable bag -> buy stuff -> use your own goddamn bag
= 1 initial expenditure in terms of money and resources

Fine then. Instead of offering incentives for recycling, how about incentives for bringing reusable bags?
