wtf, canada charges 5 cents for plastic bags?

This bylaw is news to me, but in my town there is only one grocery store that doesn't charge for bags (Walmart). The No Frills and Metro do.

I reuse plastic bags as trash bags or kitty litter bags. You can't just make a blanket statement that all plastic bags are bad for the environment...

The resuable bags are great. Instead of 12 plastic bags (multiple trips), I get 3 of the nice canvas bags (1 trip).

In conjunction to encouraging recycling, Pay as You Throw programs for garbage also cover the cost of disposal.
 
Lots of stores around here (Vancouver) are doing this now, I think it's a great idea. I bring my own bags everywhere so I don't have to worry about that.

 
the green police are just causing trouble, luckily their influence is limited in the us so far. bags get tons of reuse for garbage/doggie poo etc.. its the least of our problems.
 
They just started recently here. They've done it for years in austria though... i think that's where i was first exposed to it. seemed weird at the time.
 
Toronto is not a province, it is a city located in the province of Ontario, which is 3 times the size of Texas. The plastic bag thing is not unique to Toronto but the Loblaws chain of stores now dings all customers 5 cents per plastic bag and encourages the use of reusable ones.

BTW, I generally (re)use cloth bags but I'll get some plastic bags every once in a while as they are needed for the garbage bin.

It apparently works according to today's paper. I generally refuse bags now cause I'm cheap and don't want to pay 5 cents; screw the environment.

So, buy some decent quality bags and reuse them. Whaaaa, I have to pay for bags that used to be free...whaaaaa.
 
A store here in Arizona gives you a 5 cent credit for each bag you save when you use reusable bags. My wife made a bunch, they're significantly stronger than plastic ones and they carry quite a bit more.
