WTF can I do with this POS?

I found this lappy... IBM Thinkpad 560 (Pentium 90/8MB RAM/2.0GB HDD/12.1 Active Matrix) in a batch of crap I bought at auction, It works well enough, just its old and I dont' have parts for it (CD or Floppy).

What the hell can I do with it? To put an OS on it, I could take out the hard drive and plug it into my testing rig via an adapter and load Win95/98 on it (I think 98 needs 16MB ram though), or something else..

What would you do with this thing?

Run Linux on it of corse 😀
It could make a nice portable SSH station if it had a wireless card.

Alternately, you could run FreeDOS and use it as a gaming station for all your old DOS favorites. Eg: X-Com, Transport Tycoon, Commander Keen and Doom. Then you could laugh at people's PSPs, which have a puny screens compared to your monster 12'er.

It might work as a MP3 player, although it might be a bit slow for that...

I'd gut the damn thing, mount it in a picture frame, and hang it on the wall if it had a few more megs of RAM.... Though the prospect of playing GTA II in all its DOS glory is rather enticing.

I'd see if I could snag a few more megs of RAM, and use it as a DOS gaming system and/or pictureframe. It's not hard to find an old joypad at Goodwill these days, and a CompactFlash PCMCIA card reader is only a few bucks on eBay. As an added bonus, you could keep in on your desk at work, and play Doom during your coffee breaks. (Normally, you'd just have it displaying pictures off of a CF card.)

The best solutions are ( and some of them already suggested but oh well) :

1- Install DSL Linux (only 50 mb in size) it comes with word editing software, xmms player(for mp3's and what not) pdf reader , Firefox
and lots more.

2- Use it as a picture frame , and I have seen alot of nice picture frame projects out there.

3- Using it to control other computers through SSH is also a good idea, as that will only require a very very minimal installation of Linux and a terminal with SSH support. You can also acess FTP from there and much more.

You can get creative with it, do anyhting you think might be necessary 😀

If I recall correctly, the Thinkpad 5x0 series were the predecessors to the T-series...

If that screen can do 1024x768, then it would make a great X-Terminal. If only 800x600, Win98 Lite would work.

Hah, I actually had a similar system, but it had 16mb of ram. I installed windows 98 on it, and tried to stream music to it, but it lagged so badly that it wasn't worth it. Chances are that there is nothing really useful you can do with it, but you should keep it for the James Bond factor.

Not quite... the 600 series were the real precursors to the T-series. The 570's were kind of fat and clunky, but they were easy to upgrade and generally got the job done.

I'd toss out the old (probably noisy) drive and stick in a smallish 64mb ide card interface, find an old wired ethernet card off ebay, and load up a thin client on the machine.

You recall incorrectly. The 5x0 series is the precursor to the noew x series.

Stick it somewhere in the house and use it as a websurfer. Kitchen is the best place for it, look up recipies etc....
