WTF can be interfering with my WiFi network??

I just set up a Wifi network in my home here. This computer is in my bedroom , and the router is less than 8 feet away in the adjoining room.
However, my signal strength was initiall at Very Low / Not Available though I could browse the web just fine. My AIM would disconnect a lot though.

So I raised the router to a shelf about 6' high and a few feet closer to where it is now -signal strength is still at "Low"

The only thing between this room and the next is a thin door is some drywall.

Any ideas?

Using flourescent lighting at all in the house? The ballast in those have been known to cause problems with a number of other items.

Did you try changing the channels that your wireless AP works on? With mine, the signal would drop out fairly regularly and changing the channel fixed that.

There is also -

Cordless telephones that use the 2.4 GHz range.
Microwave ovens.
X10 Devices, such as those that control automatic lighting and universal remote controls.
and Bluetooth devices....

🙂

- Took my 2.4 ghz motorola cordless out of the room, replaced it with a 900mhz vtech. No change.
- Turned off my compact flourescent light. No change.
- No microwaves nearby, no bluetooth, no x10

Grrr :|

Well, maybe your card is not working properly. I had to update drivers on one of my cards before it worked right, stupid Dlink.

Totally forgot about updating to newest DLink drivers from the built in WinXp ones.

I'm going to go crawl into my hole and beat myself senseless with a large rock now.

It surprises me how often shipping drivers do not perform as advertised. Window's driver database is often a big joke as well.
