Yea, I remember the $5 for $5 Roast Beef Sandwhiches at Arby. I'm so hungry, I can eat at Arby.

And how come Subway is now promoting $12 for 3 foot long sandwiches? I thought they were promoting a healthy diet, 3 foot long can't be too healthy. Did they fire Jared? Size is in again.

i think that was with coupon/sale. regular price has been 5/5.95 for awhile.

When I worked at Arby's (sandwhich maker one day a week to pay for college fun money) it was always more expensive than 5 for $5. That was the end of 1995 and all of 1996/1997.

But anyways, the nitpicking doesn't kill my point. My point was that yes it went up, it went up about the same as most other items. It went up 40% in a dozen or more years. Big deal. Most everything else went up as well, and 40% during that time is about average. You can't expect things to stay at one price forever.

I believe the last 5 for $5 deal was before 1995, but lets use that as a start. Lets also use 3% inflation.
1995: $5.00
1996: $5.15
1997: $5.30
1998: $5.46
1999: $5.63
2000: $5.80
2001: $5.97
2002: $6.15
2003: $6.33
2004: $6.52
2005: $6.72
2006: $6.92
2007: $7.13

So, they are actually a bit cheaper than 3% inflation. The deal isn't too bad. Especially considering that the minimum wage just rose.

Seriously, did you just make up those numbers or did you actually research this?

Is it really that hard?
5*1.03 = 5.15
5.15*1.03 = 5.31
5.31*1.03 = 5.46
etc.

These are not "made up" numbers. Those are the numbers that you would get if the price at Arby's had gone up roughly in step with inflation. No, these are NOT prices that Arby's used. I said right at the top of that post what prices Arby's used ($5, $5.55, $5.95, and $6.95 is what I've seen). But these are prices that would be EXPECTED if it went up with inflation.

I used those numbers so show that $6.95 isn't that out of line. If it went from $5 to $15 in that time frame, it would be out of line. If it went from $5 to $3 it would be out of line. But, it is right about where economists would expect it to be.

LOL Dullard you rock.

GD I miss me some Arb-ay... alas my journey to convince the Air Force to drop all other fast food franchises in favor of Arby's continues in vain...

EDIT: Interesting tidbit for you Arby's fans. In Palmer Alaska there is an Arby's that has a unique item call the Fairbanks Special. It's a Big Montana that has been divvied up into multiple containers so all those poor schmucks in Fairbanks can bring their equally schmuck coworkers and family members back their smack in a less soggy condition. That's right, Fairbanks (almost 300m miles away from Anchorage/Palmer) doesn't have an Arby's (closed due to health code violations just like every other restaurant in FB's history) so the folks from Fairbanks for to Palmer to get their fix. I've done it myself 3 times :)

First off I'd just like to say that Arby's is the best fast food type place ever, they may be more expensive, but it is totally worth it. The lowest I ever remember was 5 for 4.00$, and that was probably around 1995 or something. Also, concerning inflation, I worked as an intern for a multibillon dollar cooperation and they used 3% inflation as the baseline for all their calculations, so thats probably good enough here. I'm sure if you really want you can go back and sum up all the actual data for the last 15 years to see what the actual value would be in 1995 dollars and such, but I would guess its probably pretty close to what it is now. Incidentally though, the minimum wages just went up, and the price of meat is going up due to corn prices going up (cows eat corn) due to ethanol. So these two factors might have caused it to rise so drastically, also, gasoline and electricity prices ahve been going up recently more than inflation so this might also be driving it up a little right now.

Are you seriously going to argue about that number?

ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/special.requests/cpi/cpiai.txt">Data source of CPI data, do your own math.</a> Historical inflation averaged 3.29% from July 1913 to July 2007. Inflation averaged 2.63% from July 1995 to July 2007. So forgive me for just picking a simple number to work with of 3% which is right in line with history.

So, if I use the CPI increase of 2.63% over that time frame, $5 in July 1995 becomes $6.83 now. Again, $6.95 is right about on target. Give it a couple of months and it'll match exactly.

But of course, now you will come back and say the CPI includes things like computers that got cheaper. So, I should use the PPI. And not just the full PPI, but the raw unprocessed food PPI. Well go looking for historical data on that. When you get it, bring it here and I can do the math. I can tell you that finished consumer foods went up in the lower 2% range over that time frame. I just don't know what happened to their raw material prices.

Not to mention that all of this is useless unless we get the exact date when the 5 for $5 started (I'm giving the worst case scenerio of 1995, but I know it started earlier than that). Suppose it started in 1992 instead of 1995, then at 2.63% inflation, the price should be $7.38 now, and $6.95 looks quite good.
Oh no I just got a cost of living raise last year and it was 1.15% haha

Arby's food is so good I'm going there less because of that increase though. When I was in San Fransisco the other week i saw 5 for $5.95 still but here in Minneapolis every Arby's has said 5 for $6.95 for almost 2 months now. Gah such good food though :(

if you get all sandwiches its still a good deal; getting other stuff even when it was for 5.95 is where they make their money

Heck, I still pretty much prefer just getting the biggest f***ing roast beef sandwich they offer (Big Montana was easily one of my all time favorite fast food items, now its impossible to find around here and I don't even know if it still exists elsewhere.
