WTF? Anthony Edwards (Dr. Greene) coming back to E.R. for an episode in the final season

I admit, I haven't watched E.R. in about two or three seasons due to the vast amount of suckage, but damn if this doesn't scream desperate on the part of the writers:

Look who ER dug up to celebrate its final season: Dr. Mark Greene, who died of a brain tumor in Hawaii back in 2002. Original cast member Anthony Edwards signed a deal Wednesday night to reprise his popular character for the Nov. 13 episode of the long-running NBC drama.

Dearly departed Mark will not be spooking Linda Cardellini (of Scooby Doo fame), but rather will be appearing in multiple flashback scenes to give insight into the past of Angela Bassett's character.

In the episode, Bassett's Cate Banfield enters County General Hospital's emergency room ? but not in a doctor capacity. At her bedside is Edwards, who collected numerous awards for playing one of TV's all-time most compassionate docs.

Entitled "Heal Thyself," the episode is to shoot next week and was written by ER executive producer David Zabel, who will also direct. For its 15th and final season, the series hopes to bring back other familiar vets for one last hurrah, including Noah Wyle, who will return for four of the final episodes.

The man went out with honor on the show, and it was quite touching I might add. Why do they have to bring him back, even if it's for a flashback sequence?

It's sucked for quite some time. Sometime before they chopped off Romano's arm with a helicopter and then killed him by smushing him with another helicopter.

Yeah, that was absolutely ridiculous. How he hell could you kill off one of the best characters on the show -- let alone cut off his arm.

I began really losing interest when Benton left -- I loved that jackass.

The time you are thinking of is right after Anthony Edwards left. Which is what I consider the end of the series.

I used to watch ER every week. I didnt watch it much last year. Just losing interest. It had a nice long run, time to let it go. I am sure in 3 years a new ER type show will show up that will be popular.

I have every ER Season on DVD up until 8, and I think they are all very good. I haven't watched the show in 2 years though and this stunt just smacks of retarded.

Maybe they'll pull a dream sequence ala Dallas or a flashback sequence. Edit: N/M just noticed the flashback sequence line in the OP. Missed that in my first scan through of the post.

Hey, how come they aren't bringing back in Noah Wylie?

Yeah, the earlier seasons are golden. I watch it in the mornings on TNT. They run the episodes, two per day, in order. The first two or three seasons are simply BRILLIANT IMHO and slowly trail off from there before imploding after Greene Dies. Once Greene dies, that's when I stop watching the TNT episodes and wait for it to cycle around again.

He's dead, Jim.

I stopped watching a year or so before Noah Wyle left; it was around the time Paul Gross got pancaked. I didn't start until about season 6. The new characters just aren't that likable.

Ugh. I've been at work too long today. My reading skills have cratered the last half hour. Oy

It's a great show but it gets just a tad formulaic sometimes. How many seasons have there been now?

Let's see, person is sick, ornary House is barely interested in case, something happens so he becomes interested, patient is misdiagnosed, patient nearly dies, House has epiphany and saves his/her life. Rinse, repeat. /yawn.
