Amanda Maria Athey, 27, taught English at Hopewell High.A 27-year high school English teacher is in jail this afternoon, accused of having a sexual relationship with a female student. Amanda Maria Athey, who resigned her post at Hopewell High on Tuesday, turned herself in to Cabarrus County authorities at about 2 p.m. today. She is charged with three counts of indecent liberties and one count of sexual activity between a teacher and student. She is being held on a $4,000 bond.

Earlier this month, the father of a 16-year-old Hopewell student told police he taped telephone conversations and found e-mails between the teacher and his daughter. The father said he found evidence of a sexual relationship in those communications, according to the court documents. Athey taught freshman at the Huntersville school. She had been suspended before her resignation and arrest.</a>

edit: Yes, I admit I watched "Nancy Grace" on CNN last night. They were talking about a Tacoma 31-yr old teacher who was charged with raping a 10-yr old student. WTF!

Depends on where you are... Most of Canada and I believe most of Europe age of consent is 16. I believe certain states also have a 16 year old age of consent.

Depends on the state and the law. Consent in some states is if you are within a certain age. For instance 18 year old can have legal consent to bang his\her 16 year old partner. But it may not protect a 27 year old or older from banging them.

There is a weird tendency in the US for people to think that anyone who has or wants to have sex with someone under the age of 18 is automatically a pedophile, when this is not the case.

On the other hand, I do not believe the age of consent should be set flatly at 14. My personal belief is that it should be around 16, with a sliding scale that takes in to account the age difference. For example, I think that in most cases a 45 year old guy having sex with a 16 year old girl isn't right because it leaves too much opportunity for physical and emotional exploitation and damage.
