why go in the first place if you don't like your date and/or dont enjoy any of the activities that the prom entails?

Honestly, I would venture to guess that 90% of the people there will have no clue what they are doing on the dance floor. Just go out and have a good time. Don't worry about looking ridiculous while dancing. As long as you are confident and enjoying yourself, both you and your date will have a good time.

Here's my tips (from another n00b dancer):

Fast dance:
Pretend like your playing DDR if they play some good techno

That's what I did, and for some reason, people started clearing the area around me and watching me go... Also, the Running Man is easy to learn, looks stupid, but it seems to work. If they play any of that cRAP some high schools call "popular music", just go with the flow and make yourself look like an idiot. If you DON'T look like an idiot, then you stick out even more. With hard rock, go with the classic headbanging (but don't hit your date's head though, that'll put you both down on each other in the less-preferable way)

Slow dance:
Wrap your arms around her (waist or back or ass or whatever you want :evil: ) and just rotate in a clockwise direction....

Note:
I agree with most everyone else when I say that #2 in your activities doesn't sound so bad ... I'd even make it #1

anyway, just relax and enjoy yourself. There's not much you can do now since you promised to go with her. Make the best situation out of it. Just go with the flow and talk bs with your date. Don't dance if you don't wanna, unless you felt your date wants to, be gentleman and dance with him. even though you both know you both cannot dance at all. When the night's over, take her home and you can go home to play CS.

that'd be my vote. I didn't dance or drink or have sex on prom night (went with an ex-girlfriend... we were still good friends, but anything other than group dancing would have been awkward), but I was still able to have a good time because we spent the entire night hanging with all of our friends.

with no dancing, no drinking, no sex, and no friends... I'm not sure if I'd even bother going.

honestly, it's not that hard to slow dance. All you got to do is hold her at the waste and step i ncircles. heck, you can even talk to her during the dance and strike up a good conversation. Me and a friend basically spent the night singing all the sons they played while we danced... ahh, the good'ol days when i was young =)

Why do people care so much about looking like a retard when dancing?

Yeah, I dance and I like it. Yeah, I know I look like a complete moron, especially after I've had a few. HOWEVER, I'd like to see the people on the sidelines critiquing me try to dance too, let's see how well you do it. When you're dancing, the last thing you are looking at is how another guy is dancing and you won't likely remember it after a few minutes so who cares.

I went with a aquantence to the prom, we danced for maybe 20min and talked for about 10hrs, saw the sunrise, and took her out to breakfast at a diner she'd been dying to go to but never gone. Maybe I didn't get drunk or laid but I had a really great time and so did my date, which is the important thing.
