WTF!, alpha pal6035 not as good as expected

heard great stuff about this HS/F, got mine today and it looks badass!

So, removed the hs/fan that came with the boxed duron (fan on the alpha almost as big as entire boxed hs/f!), cleaned off their "bubble gum" stuff with rubbing alcohol and did the same to the bottom of the alpha. Then i put on a thin layer of the silver stuff included with the alpha, clamped it on and was expecting big improvements, NOT!

First off, let me say i raised the thermal probe on the abit kt7 so it is probably right against the chip (prior, it was a little off)

Duron 600 idle temps
boxed fan:
600mhz - 38C
850mhz, 1.55v - 42C

alpha:
600 - 40C
850, 1.55V - 51C

This sucks! yeah, the temps might be more accurate now (ie prior, could have been too low) but the alpha should have kept it at the old temps or better. I have the fan blowing into the heat sink, would it be better with it blowing out? What can i do to improve this situation? I feel like i wasted $35.

This particular Alpha's instructions direct you to mount the fan so that it draws air up, through the HS. May I ask which fan you're using?

YS Tech 60mm "high performance" fan, i have it blowing in becuase i saw a few posts here saying they got better results that way.

Mounting thermistor probes in the area of the junction between the CPU and HSF is a tricky business! Some folks assert that it can NOT be done with modern little glass slugs. If you have a good junction, and applied a very thin, uniform layer of Arctic Silver, and your temps are higher, someone at Alpha needs to get a rocket about this! I'm using the PEP66 at the moment, on a P3E of course. I have the fan set to draw air up, through the HS as per Alpha's instruction sheet. I'm using the Delta 38 cfm CPU fan. My temps haven't been spectacularly low, I must admit. However, they're 20C less than with a weeny HS that I had on the CPU originally. And the Delta "Black label" is the noisiest fan in Christendom. Your YSTech is whisper quiet in comparison. I know, I've used both!

i don't know if i have artic silver, the alpha came with a syringe of silver stuff, no name, 4cc total amount in the syringe.

just cause a few people got better results blowing onto it, the majority of us have muhc better results sucking air away from it, as kloster's says, the way alpha designed it.

i flipped the fan so now it sucks air from the HS and blows it away from it. idle 15min, 850mhz, 1.55v, 52C cpu, 30C case.

The paste that comes with an Alpha is NOT Arctic Silver. In fact, it is not silver, it is zinc oxide based.

The stuff that comes with an alpha is white in a little packet. He got a syringe of silver stuff. That sounds like the Arctic silver to me !!!

My guess is that your thermal probe is interfering with good contact. Doesn't the duron/tbird have an on-die thermal sensor like the celerons and new P3's? If so why would you use an external probe?

Wait, I understand now...

the kt7 relies on a thermistor underneath the CPU. Before, it wasn't contacting the cpu at all. Now, he raised it to where it is contacting the cpu.

You can't rely on any old temp readings anymore. Especially with flip chip cpu's, the backside of the cpu isn't the warmest part anymore. Since it wasn't contacting it, it was essentially measuring air temp underneath the cpu. Now that it is touching the backside of the cpu, it'll produce more accurate temp readings(albeit still overall fairly inaccurate).

Warrenton,

He says the syringe had no name. Every syringe of Arctic Silver is clearly labeled.

The syringe contained 4cc. A syringe of Arctic Silver contains less than 2cc.

My guess is that he is calling the Alpha "toothpaste" type tube a syringe.

Final point, If he got an Alpha PAL6035 AND a tube of Arctic Silver for $35.00, we should all be shopping where he does.

the "silver stuff" did not come in a packet or a toothpaste tube, it came in a syringe, it looks like what a diabetic uses to inject insulin (of course it does not have a needle at the end).

I'm gonna put the boxed duron fan back on in a few minutes to compare. Won't be identical setup as last time since the "bubble gum" amd put on the bottom of the hs was left on the cpu, will use the "silver stuff".

boxed duron600 with silver stuff:
idle 850, 1.55v, 45C with boxed fan
idle 850, 1.55v, 40C with alpha

Don't know what i did wrong the first time.

As the manufacturer of Arctic Silver, my concern is that people reading this thread are thinking that thehammer is using Arctic Silver thermal compound or that it was somehow conveyed or implied to thehammer that the "Unlabeled 4 gram insulin type" syringe contained Arctic Silver. (Or any silver based compound for that matter since A.S. and Circuit Works are the only silver compounds available and neither meets his packaging description.)

With the success of Arctic Silver, we have already caught some unscrupulous retailers selling fake A.S. which was nothing more than standard zinc-oxide paste with silver food coloring added. Like a remarked processor, this fraud eventually harms us all so please be a wise consumer.

If you have a product that has been represented as Arctic Silver and it did not come in a black or white syringe with a brushed silver label that matches the shape and size of the syringe shown the picture at the site referenced in my signature, please contact me at the email in my profile so we can begin an investigation.

Thank you,

Nevin House

This alpha doesn't have the plastic feet right? Anyways, your core probably would've burned up by now if there was that big of a gap 🙂 Just remember to be careful when taking the HSF on and off. I sacrificed my last duron to the God of cooling 🙁
