WTF adults not allowed near children in the library.

Went to a new library today and what I saw stunned me. The children computers and books were in a separate room with a glass door. And the sign on the door was loud and clear "You Must Be Under 18 to Enter". They had lots of children in there with 2 female staff members watching over them. Really people is it necessary to wall of the children from the adults in the library. What if an adult wants to check out a child book, they can't. Way over protection if you ask me.

It makes perfect sense to separate the children's area, of course. But disallowing adults? That's nuts. My parents used to always bring home books for me from the library - now I'd have to accompany them to get the books? Weird.

If you want to take out a children's book from the public library go ahead and do it- it's not like they can stop you.

Spoiler:

He gets mauled by a pack of wild Russian tigers, spends three weeks in an ICU, and dies a slow painful death

why the hell would an adult want to be around other people's children if that's not his profession like being a teacher or being Mr.Rogers himself? It's not the library that being over-protective it's just there are too many sick fucks out there.

Parents, teachers, baby sitters, etc.

Statistically children are safer from "sick fucks" when surrounded by strangers than by their own families.

Like I said earlier, my parents used to bring home books for me when they went to the library. That in itself seems like a good enough case, but we could easily thing of a dozen other reasons for adults to be in the kid's section.

it's probably because they don't want people looking at pornography on the children's computers

Been to a Chuckie Cheese lately?
We had to practically show three forms of photo ID to get in, when entering without a child accompanying us. Then when leaving with my little nephew, heading to the parking lot, we were stopped until other adults verified the kid was actually part of our family group.
But I don't mind...
I'd much rather everyone be too safe, than let one child molester figure out an angle and get away with snatching a kid.
In this age of world wide communication and connections, people that use to never have the chance to carry out their hideous event can now find all the information and assistance they need.

IronWing and Broheim are right. Being molested by an unfamiliar person is pretty much at the bottom of list of things which statistically threaten children. Library's actions are just stupid.

I bet some of the older children are actually the most likely library porn-browsers...

Even if that were the motivation, the library could simply restrict the children's section computers for children. Not the books, not the section.

If that kind of idiocy was practiced at my library, I'd try to loan a children's book and see how that works. I suppose they would then have to escort me in to pick a book or fetch me one that I want. Either way it's hassle for them. If I kept loaning one book every time I go, most likely they would eventually make an exception and wave me through without oversight, thus proving the rule had no real point in the first place.

Then it would be possible to write or meet the management to ask about the policy, and to go public with their response which will inevitably be badly reasoned.

So . . . their own parents can't be with their children in the library?

Sounds to me like a great way to get the kids away from the parents for later use... :sneaky:

Next time go in the room and when they tell you not to be in there ask them why and when they point to the sign look at them with a sad face and say you can't read.

It's pretty ironic when the hysteria-induced enforcement actions put kids in danger, or directly help pedos. (Not saying this library does! :D)

We have a law-enforced internet censorship which is circumvented in seconds by anyone who knows how to google. Better yet, the list of censored URLs is possible to scour easily. So it's really a case of the police putting together a child porn directory for the benefit of the pedos. The only mitigating factor is that in their incompetence the police has mostly put *legal* material on the list. Two wrongs make a not-so-bad?

Heh, try being a male librarian (unknown to the staff) and walk around the childrens section. The encounters with the staff are entertaining.

Gary Coleman at age 24 could walk in there with no problem (long as he had no facial hair)

Please elaborate. :)

The people that work in libraries tend to have a wide spectrum of personalities. Some will just ignore me, others immediately get bitchy and question why I am there. The ones that do that tend to not be fully trained librarians (meaning with the appropriate Masters degree). It is entertaining explaining to them that I am there looking at their collection to get ideas of what to get for my nephews or such, and that I am doing it as a librarian. They then tend to freak out a little bit realizing that they should have been just a tad nicer since I probably know their boss's boss's boss.
