I pay more b/c they charge extra for the DVR-HD box - the only reason i have it is b/c I want to watch HD shows on my time. My tv is the 37" 1080p westy, and its hooked up to my computer.

No, they can't charge extra for HD channels, but they only include them in the digital+ package or whatever its called. I dont watch any of those extra 200 channels except for the HD versions of fox/abc/nbc etc.

We don't get, at least where i am, OTA ABC.

i'll just have to go back to DLing the hi-def torrent and piping it through my computer :(

Cable companies CANNOT charge for local HD, it is against the law for them. The only company causing problem is the Networks.

Local HD Channels MUST be unencrypted. Just try pluging a QAM tunner from a TV an it should work just fine with local HD Channels.

Charging and carrying are two different things. I don't believe cable companies are required to carry locals in HD (they are required to carry them SD, here anyway). I also believe that they charge the cable companies to carry their station, or do sometimes anyway.

Our ABC has told Time Warner that they cannot even transmit their channel in unencrypted QAM.

Then ABC is in Violation of a federal law.

No, they are NOT required to carry it, but if they do they CANNOT charge for it.

I am not sure if you are interpreting his statement as intended. Hard to say. I thought he meant, ABC says you can't carry it at all, included in unencrypted QAM. Another interpretation would be, ABC says you can't carry it unencrypted. I am not sure if that is illegal or not... isn't the federal law pertaining to what cable companies must do if they carry it? If that is the case, then ABC requiring them to encrypt it would effectively mean they cannot carry it, since they are legally prohibited from complying.

We use to get all of that an more, for FREE. Their was an error in our cable box that allowed us to recieve HBO, STARZ, SHOWTIME, and more. Lasted for about 5 months, and one day the cable company sent a letter saying their was an error in our box and it needed to be echanged, and their went the channels.

You should have told them that the box worked just fine and that you were going to keep it. :p
