When the hell did they start doing this. All prime items now have an 8.99 surcharge if you want them delivered on Saturday.

Seems like I will need to drop prime like a big of bricks when they start charging sales tax.

That's pretty cheap considering they can deliver on a weekend. Never heard of any place that offers that. Usually it's next Tuesday (Monday if you're lucky but due to the backlog of weekend orders it's usually later)

It use to be if you order on Thursday and did two day delivery you got Sat delivery free, or if you did next day delivery on Friday you paid only 3.99 for Saturday. Now they want you to pay 8.99 for any Saturday service. Seems ridiculous.

They also switched to using ghetto USPS for a lot of their Prime shipping and making some small items in eligible for Prime unless the order is over $25 (WTF). Also, they started, or are planning to, collect sales tax in a lot of states. Last one isn't really their fault, but it is another blow to Amazon.

Even if they do start to collect sales tax their prices are still cheaper.

Until they start their own delivery service, they kind of have to charge for stuff like that.
Unless you want them to go out of business, then you'll have one less meaningless thing to bitch about to strangers.

i honestly did not expect 3.99 prime to last forever when they rolled it out. shipping shit is expensive and was bound to catch up with them at some point, once the service got popular.

that doesnt annoy me too much, as theres not much i order that i give a damn about getting on saturday, and most of the time if i order an item on day X, and then another item on day x+1, i get them both the same day (x+2) so i basically get free overnight on the second item.

Do you guys even read what you're typing? Amazon with sales tax will still be cheaper than just about anywhere else. $8.99 for Saturday delivery regardless of package size is also cheap.

"Oh noes!! Sales tax and a Saturday delivery fee!! I'm dropping them!!!" LOL!

This thread reminds me of some comments I read the other day on another site where some jackass was all high and mighty and said Prime was for "suckers" who are getting "ripped off" because "not much is eligible for Prime." If I wouldn't have been so lazy, I would've signed up and made a fool of him. The VAST majority of my orders are Prime eligible ( I do between 80 and 100 orders per year) and I guarantee Amazon is losing money on shipping costs for me.

So you order $15 item and pay $9 for delivery and it's still cheaper than say Walmart or Target? Amazon is not that cheap anymore. Just like their shipping charges, prices on their regular items have crept up and now on par or more expensive than local B&M. They're almost always more expensive for daily consumer items and food. For electronics and other items you can pretty much always find better prices elsewhere.

This isn't a change to current shipping, it is a new option. $3.99 one day shipping never did Saturday from my experience or at least guaranteed Saturday, it was always Monday. I don't think this changes orders on Thursdays either.

well, it sucks that Saturday delivery is not part of "free" Prime 2-day shipping anymore. Looks like stuff ordered on Thursday arrive Monday now without surcharge.

Between this and the Add-On item thing I'm reconsidering Prime. Usually I'm just too lazy to buy locally (especially with One-Click so easy especially with 2 day) but its getting to the tipping point now where items ordered on Friday don't come until Tuesday or Wednesday the next week even with 2-day shipping (that's bordering 4 or 5 days!)

I think that if you can get it locally than you might be able to get it cheaper than amazon and $9 Sat shipping. But if you don't have the time or are to lazy to get off you ass and drive the 20 miles to the nearest Best-buy, deal with the crazies, wait in line, pay sales tax to boot and then drive back home, $9 bucks is really pretty sweet for next day weekend delivery. My billable time is $125 an hour so wasting 2 hours to save $9 is really silly. Now if you are collecting welfare............

I still don't think this is the case. The 8.99 Saturday delivery looks like it only shows up on Fridays. According to prime, Saturday is still included on some items.. same as it has always been. This is only effecting next day shipping on Fridays as far as I can tell.

If you need something so urgently on a Saturday, why on earth would you order it online in the first place? Especially if it is a $15 item and you're paying $9 shipping? If Target or Walmart has it and you need it so damn bad, of course you should go buy it locally. That's common sense. Regardless of who you order from online, you're going to get hit with a bigger charge for Saturday delivery.

There are other online companies who are cheaper on some things, but oftentimes, their shipping costs brings total cost to the same level of Amazon (compare apples to apples here -- 2 day shipping at the "other place" vs. free 2 day shipping with Prime). Additionally, I have an Amazon Visa so I rake in the reward points like mad when I order from Amazon. So far, I've gotten a ton of free stuff (a new U2410 monitor, new computer, Roku, RC plane, and a bunch of other stuff) just from my reward points and I've definitely spent less than if I had gone locally. You might argue that I could've found better deals online and I'll grant that, but often not at the same, one-stop shop and rarely with free shipping and that shipping largely negates the cost advantage.

You guys complaining about Prime are also forgetting the free streaming video and book "rentals" you get with Prime.

That's my experience too. I paid the $3.99 shipping maybe 3 times because it claimed I'd get Saturday delivery, and I think I actually received a package on Saturday only one of those times and I suspect it was from the Amazon warehouse locate about 2 miles from my house.

Could be. I was looking to buy a Prime item and 2-day shipping would arrive on Tuesday, so it wasn't counting Saturday as a transit day which kind of stinks. I would be OK with $9 to arrive Saturday but 2-day arriving Monday.

Um....normally costs $3.99 per item, if you want them next day. Saturday deliveries ALWAYS cost more. So why would you be surprised??

The shipping rates are still VERY fair with prime. Try getting one day delivery for $3.99 for a decent-sized item anywhere else.

I have a feeling they'll start charging more for one day delivery for larger items in the future, which will be disappointing. For now, it's awesome.

Last few things I've ordered w/ free 2 day shipping arrived the next day, and I just paid $3.99 to overnight deliver a fucking weight bench...prime still very much worth it for me...

When we moved I forgot the Samsung tv I ordered from Sears still needed a stand! It was Wednesday 1:45PM , and the move was at 3PM Thursday. I hit up amazon for that stand I remembered I loved, ordered with prime with 3.99$ next day shipping. It arrived the next morning at 10:15AM. That page said shipping weight was 118lbs. Amazon lost their ass on that.

For the small stuff it's rarely worth it to do next-day or Saturday shipping, that's true. But I still save a good amount on certain items (refills for my Braun "Clean and Renew" system are a great example) when I don't need them immediately and they're difficult to find locally.

That's the big advantage of Amazon for me; even though I live in a great area for tech junkies, it can be difficult to find what I want in stock in local stores, but Amazon will usually have the model I'm looking for in stock and it's ultimately preferable for me to have Amazon ship the item I actually want rather driving out to a local B&M and buying something that's "close enough" for the same price.
