My Abit AT7-MAX 2 has an empty space between the AGP and PCI slots. Of course I only have 5 PCI slots but that cooler wouldn't block anything.

Guys, what we need are fewer fans, not more. Fewer fans=Less noise. I'd like to see completely fanless systems.

This one doesn't burst your ear drums and actually does it's job very well.

Indeed... it's one of the quietest VGA fans out there. But it also isn't a requirement. You can get 9800Pros wich only need the AGP slot (nice for Shuttle XPC owners... high power Nvidia cards just won't fit :D )

For the people who are saying only 2 slots are you the people who put a PCI card in the slot right below your video card? I thought it was common practice NOT to use a PCI card directly beneath the fan like that?

So I would figure
1 AGP slot for the video card
1 PCI slot for the actual cooler and
1 PCI slot for air circulation

Total of 3 slots At least that is my take on this.

-you could say the same of all videocards with fans. Thus, all videocards are two slot solutions if you're going to call this a three slot. Otherwise, that's a double standard.
-it's only two slot. You can put a card below it. Or, if this is a three slot, then the radeon 9800series is a dual slot.

Yeah I do consider all Video cards with a fan to take up 2 slots It was not a double standard at all. I was just trying to show the perspective the others were saying they take up 3 slots thats all.

Well, you're wrong. You can run a PCI card next to all of them. They're designed that way. That's why they're called single slot solutions. They only need about 1mm of clearance for the fan.

I don't see how im wrong, thats how I do things. I was never pushing ever one to do that. I was just telling people how I thought others meant by saying it takes up 3 slots because many people feel the same wayand i don't think some people knew that. I was also under the impression that using the top PCI slot and the AGP slot would cause a conflict with IRQ's which might not be much of a problem nowadays but it once was.

If you absolutely MUST leave the next PCI slot open to get air flow (overkill, IMHO) at least put in a really low-profile NIC in that slot so that you gain a network port and still have tons of airspace. ;)

It uses 2 slots...

I regret choosing my crucial card over the artic silencer one I saw for just a little more. Everything I've heard around here it that it's a better cooler than the stock ATI one, while also being a lot quieter. Flick the switch, and its a much better cooler and a slightly noisier one. Plus there's the added benefit of chucking the heat out of the case, so might help cut down the case fan needs for a quiet system.

I really wouldnt care about it taking up 2 slots, plus the third to allow for airflow. Many mobo's have 5 or even 6 PCI slots, often with a big gap between the AGP and PCI slots on the motherboard, which can count for a slot. I doubt many people have more than 2 or 3 PCI cards in their PCs, and those that do, dont buy this.

Dotn see what the excitement is, if the thing was actually taking up 3 slots, and hence a 4th for airflow, that would be more or less new, but the "2/3" slot vga coolers have been around for bloody ages, notably with the stock cooler on the Nvidia 5800.

It won't make any difference if you put a card in the 3rd slot. In fact I have my nic there.
I use one of these and the heatsink is enclosed so its not necessary to have airflow across it. The fan blows the air out the back of the case.

It is also the quietest fan I've heard. If anyone is familiar with the Panaflo L1A's- It's quieter than those. In fact it's quieter than the fan on my Antec Sonata's power supply.

this isnt made by ATi, they have no control over what cooling solution OEMs use

Nice thing aboot the Zalman is that it does not require a fan. But it would prolly be cooler and quieter than this one if if you wanted to open a slot cover below it and direct some air across it either from a front case fan or hanging a fan behind it. I used to do that with a switched 92mm Panaflo (only on for gaming) behind a 8500 that had its HSF replaced with a relatively large HS.

YOu suck at counting. One for the card, one PCI slot.
Haha, if you guys look any closer you're going to end up banging your head on your monitor!
