So I got a blu-ray movie from netflix last week. tried to play it but it kept skipping on me. I did notice that there were 2 scratches on it, so I assume that was the problem.

Reported it to netflix as damaged and had them send another copy. just put it in now and my player (ps3) doesn't even notice its there.

I put in another blu-ray I had and that immediately came up fine. so my player is ok.

I don't see any problems with this new copy so I have no idea why it won't work. it's fucking annoying.

Night at the Museum 2. The first copy was recognized and tried to play, it just was a damaged disc. This new copy doesn't appear to be damaged but my player won't even recognize that its in the player.

hmm, only Netflix BD I've had a problem with is Rambo (the new one--and what a fucking horrible movie that was :p)

got another copy from Netflix and it worked. Also on PS3. I was getting "unrecognized disc" error code.

Some random BDs are just screwy that way.

either update to latest firmware, or do hard power down, try to get it to play? Used to be a pretty common issue when the format was brand new, still working out the profiles, with spotty functioning from player to player. PS3 has generally been the most reliable player, though.

You can maybe see what the folks at AVS have to say. If it's a common issue with NatM2, then they'll have reported it.

I don't watch too many BD movies but my PS3 has never had any issues with them. Discs could be damaged or your laser might be going. The latter is a common problem on some PS3s.

I guess. It's a PS3 so it should notify me when there is an update, right?

edit: apparently it doesn't. I am updating it now. It should be no more than 1 update behind though.

I usually leave one or two brick grace days (as in waiting to see if people had problems with their PS3s after the update) and then I update. I've never had an issue with a Blu-ray not playing and I watch a lot of Blu-rays.

Hopefully the update fixes it for you.

Hmm I thought BR discs were supposed to be resistant to scratching? Like you actually have to try and scratch it.

No its actually pretty much the exact same thing as a DVD or CD or Laserdisc, just got smaller bits so they can fit more on a disc. In fact the bits are so small they need a blue laser cuz the wavelength of a red laser is so big it wont read or write that small.

Eventually we will be using the valence electrons of a single atom to store bits.

wait. My sarcasm meter may be broke, but it's definitely doing something right now.
:hmm:

Anyhow, yes, all retail discs are treated with an awesome coating that basically renders it insanely difficult to scratch.

I've yet to even see a scratched disc, and I've used just about anything nearby to remove dirt from discs of my own; I don't baby them and basically place them anywhere and on anything (DVDs and CDs I baby since they are so prone to just about anything scratching them).

And all my Blockbuster Online discs (and in-store) have yet to have anything other than dirt and fingerprints, all easily removed with the roughest of cloths or clothing. :)

You know what? That's your problem right there. Seriously with that movie choice? Someone's telling you something.

The Ronin Blu-Ray I bought doesn't play on my computer Blu-ray. It seems Blu-rays are a lot more fickle to play on certain players than DVD's were.

I've had issues with playing blu-rays on my PS3 due to some blu-ray live crap. Once I disabled the network connection it they played just fine.

Netflix is notorious for damaged Blu-rays. Its not because they are scratched though, they are getting cracked in the mail.

Take a VERY close look at the outer edge of the disc. You will probably see a small crack somewhere.

The anti scratch coating on Blu-rays does nothing to prevent them from cracking like this.

Found an article with a picture http://marsbox.com/blog/news/cracked-netflix-blu-ray-disc-problem/

And yet if you did that-which-we-probably-can't-speak-of-here, you'd have a fully working film. And the RIAA / MPAA really & truly wonder why it's happening...

What makes you think they wonder why it's happening? They know why people pirate stuff. Free stuff is cheaper than stuff you have to pay for.

Weird. I can't say I've ever had a bad one come from BB Online. And I've probaby had over 150 rentals come through.

Update and reboot didn't fix it, still doesn't recognize the disc.

I liked the 1st Night at the Museum. it's probably the only Ben Stiller movie that I did like.
I'll try one more copy, after that I'll probably just say screw it.
