Because to get the same quality from the SLR I just bought I'd have to spend at least twice as much for digital.

EDIT: For the OP. Amazingly I've gotten very good results from my Canon Elph LT. It uses APS film. I think I paid about $30 for it on clearance from Target. It takes much better low-light pics then my S200 oddly enough and its smaller! No zoom on it as its the cheapie though.
