WTB: "Learner" motorcycle

I'd like to get a bike for the summer, something decently sporty. What price am I looking at to start? Anyone know what the steps are to get a motorcycle license in MA? If I can get out of it cheap enough, I'll really want a bike to play around with. I'm looking to not spend much (2-3 grand maybe?), what's something that's quick but safe for a beginner?

1. take teh MSF course www.msf-usa.org .. your area might be booked but go and try and see if you can take a place of a no-show.. take cash with you for that.

2. Get a bike that's used. Prefferably Suzuki Gs500, Kawasaki Ninja 500, Kawa Ninja 250, Honda Nighthawk (older 450's or maybe the 250's or 750's (though the 750's are a bit powerful)).

3. Get gear.. helmet, jacket, gloves, boots .

If you cant get teh MSF course get your permit and then ride around.. atleast you can ride day time (atleast in CA) with teh permit..

The Ninja's price looks appealing (at least what I'm seeing on eBay) at around 1500 bucks, that'd be perfect for what I want.

Well I'm just asking for some advice on what to look for and how much it's gonna cost me 😉

Motorbike now. This after!

Be careful 🙂 I really want a motorbike but it's a no no with mrsskoorb so it will never happen. I know they're dangerous as all hell but I can't get my damn mind off one.

consider good protection a must, so calculate that into your price.
although with $3k budget and bike is $1500, you won't have a problem.

What he said, DOUBLE. Don't get anything over 700cc, that is to much for a starter. Also get a good helmet and take the Cycle class. And what ever bike you get, make sure you are not to proud of it. You WILL lay that bike down, at least a couple times. So don't spend a pile of money and don't be upset if you lay it down, just do it as safely as possiable.

And I was in a motorcycle accident a cpouple of months ago, 2 things...

1. Get a GREAT helmet, and always wear it. Its not a case of if you are going to get in a accident in your life, BUT when. So even if you are moving the bike across the road, put the helmet on.
2. Always look for other drivers, they are NOT looking for you, I and my dad know this the hard way.

But have fun and do it safe.

Hell I'm thinking a 250 will be fine to learn on, and if I want anything faster, then maybe I'll go to a 500, we'll see... Plus 250's are cheaper too, which is a big plus in my situation

And thanks for the advice Marlin, I'm kinda nervous about the whole thing since I know how dangerous it is, but I just can't pass it up 🙂 looks like so much fun

Yea it is fun, but please don't ride during rush hour your first month. Ride when there is little traffic and good weather conditions. That way if you do make a mistake there is less chance it will turn into something worse.

I will be honest I layed my bike down a couple times. Once in a small neighbor hood, very few cars around I went off road, gave it to much gas so it would not turn enough, and put it in a ditch. Second time it was around a lake here and I hit some Duck S__T and slid the rear tire out. Both times traffic was very low, and the biggest thing that got hurt was my ego. 😱

But take your time, and never under estimate the idiots out on the road. And also after you ride for a month or two, you will notice how much a better driver it makes you when you drive a car. 45mph in car feels ok.., but 45 on a bike and you respect 45mph a lot more. You will also look around more and notice things you didn't before.

But have fun, and play it safe.
